Las Vegas A’s Break Ground on New Stadium

Construction workers broke ground this week on the Las Vegas Strip’s newest big thing, a stadium for the incoming Las Vegas A’s baseball team. The stadium, which will at some point almost certainly add a corporate sponsor to its name, is set for completion by the start of the 2028 baseball season and will hold 33,000 fans. It’s a huge deal for Las Vegas which has gone from professional sports ghost town to professional sports boom town over the past few years.

A’s Stadium is the latest addition to Las Vegas’ sports portfolio and will likely draw as many visiting fans as it draws hometown fans. That’s exactly the idea behind putting major sports facilities on the iconic Vegas Strip. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo stated this very clearly in comments reported on by the Las Vegas Review-Journal saying, “This is an economic driver for the state. You’re always trying to reinvent yourself to be the new best thing in entertainment. Can you think of anything better than Major League Baseball?”

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred took a higher level view of the A’s move from Oakland to Vegas saying, “All of us at Major League Baseball, all the owners, are excited to be adding Major League Baseball to the entertainment alternatives that are available here in Southern Nevada. The Athletics have a long and proud history. … I think about today as the beginning of new chapter in that great history.”

The new stadium is set to cost around $1.75 billion and was approved by Clark County voters.
