Someone asked who this law will benefit. For starters, regular bookies and USA based organized crime. Congress has rolled back gambling to the age of underground casinos and bookmaking joints that extend credit and break legs.

I remember that I got in the hole to a bookie to the tune of 5k in college and it was not a happy chapter in my life. It looks like that is what Bill Frist wants for people who like to gamble.

Do you wish to aid and abet an illegal act? I am not convinced that it will but if by chance this bill turns out to be an affective ban on gambling, then I would expect all honest webmasters will be obeying the law. If you dont youre no different than the guy on the corner peddeling illegal drugs.

Fuck the US, online gambling has always been in a very grey area, in 2004 the Us Department of justice stated that the Wire Act relating to telephone betting applies to all forms of Internet gambling, and that any advertising of such gambling “may” be deemed as aiding and abetting. So for the past few years everyone has been operating in the grey area of the law so how can you compare webmasters has no different than someone peddling drugs?

I find it interesting that CNN or no other news agency’s have ran a story on the passing of this bill. They just passed what amounts to Prohibition of the 21th Century and Yahoo,CNN has not put it on their front page. Wonder why?

    See last paragraph here:

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/09/30/congress.security.ap/index.html

“The bill served as a vehicle to carry legislation to limit Internet gambling. It passed the House 409-2 and a nearly deserted Senate cleared the bill by voice vote as one of the last items of business.”

Why don’t you guys come over to europe, the real land of the free!

Don’t PANIC! This is just a bill that will most likely get struck down by the Supreme Court. The EU court just went against the Germain ban. And now it is felt that online gambling is OK in Europe. Besides, it does not go into effect now. If you really want to get back at someone, don’t watch the NFL games. Afterall, they supported the bill.
There are ways around it and they will be found by gambling programs and money processor. Afterall, they are in business to make money!
In regard to throwing the bums out of Congress, don’t do it now unless you want 2 years of nothing being done. Do it in the year 2008!
Even if it’s prohibited, there will be ways around it for affilates. Afterall, during prohibition how do you think the Kennedys made all their money!
Enforcement will be very difficult and they are not going to waste their time on the little guy.

Disclaimer: First of all, I’m not a lawyer and I hold no responsibility for the actions of people who accept this as legal advice. It may or may not be legal, consult a gambling law attorney to make sure.

You know, I’ve never gone against any of my counterparts before, but all I hear in this thread is a bunch of whining and bitching about how “somebody else” should think of something to fix this. You want this shit to turn around? Too fucking bad, you don’t have the power. You want to do something about it to keep yourself in business? Look closely at EVERY clause in the new bill and do what an attorney would do, disect the shit out of it and put it into literal terms. Understand in COMPLETELY and THEN think of something that YOU (WE) can do to keep our business running. Don’t just sit there and bitch about some SOMEBODY ELSE needs to find the answer. Anybody who says this and just sits around waiting for it to happen is a piece of shit. However, those who say this, sit back, and CRITICALLY THINK about things in addition to knowing that others may spring up some ideas, you are the ones who will make it through this and be successful.

I am going to begin a new thread called something along the lines of “No bullshit brainstorm” both at CAP and at PAW. If you don’t have something to contribute and you are just going to bitch about things, then don’t post. Keep it to yourself. However, if you have something to contribute in terms of ideas that MIGHT ACTUALLY WORK, not saying that it has to (its a brainstorm after all), then post it.

    My Bright Idea

I for one am going to STOP promoting gambling ;) (wink wink) ;) and am going to begin promoting the .net websites. You think that advertising .com’s is the only way to profit in this industry? Remember people, most .net websites are FREE and state right on them “this is not a gambling website” which clearly fits under the rules of this current legislation. HOWEVER, players may still convert from the .net to the .com. Finding a way to deposit is their problem and I’m not going to give them advice about how to deposit (since that would clearly be against the new law). Conversions will obviously be LOWER, but hey, its a hell of a lot better than sacrificing my entire business model over one stupid law that has a high chance of being stricken due to its controversial impact on our constitutional rights.

Also, for anybody that seriously cares, you can move your operation (and yourself) to Costa Rica. As long as Costa Rican laws remain as they are, and from what I’ve heard, they DO NOT extradite individuals who break laws from other countries.

Land based casinos in the US will be looking at ENORMOUS profits. Think about it. First the online casinos and poker rooms train millions of fresh new YOUNG gamblers and get them hooked on poker. Many of these young people spends hours everyday playing poker, they eat sleep and dream the game. Then when they feel like they have reached maximum saturation of the market WHAM! you take away access to the online poker rooms! These kids are basically addicted, do you think they will give up the games they love?

Nope, they drive however many hours it takes to reach a land based, tribal or Riverboat Casino to satisfy that need! The casino operators clean up!

Shit they even tipped us off with statements like “Online gambling is as addictive as Crack!”

Maybe this was the plan all along! It’s so fucking sinister and plausible that It wouldnt shock me if there was a lot of truth hiding in there some where. :madat:

And maybe after the established online businesses go bust it will be legal only

for established landbased casinos to “extend” their licenses to go online for

    the killing.

I doubt that any of these stupid senators have thought that deeply into this bill. From what it seems, they are trying to take the “easy way out” by just banning it completely from the US. Had these guys any brains they would have established a huge tax law and written it into the IRS tax guidelines and not into federal law.

I’d rather stick to the whining and bitching. I’m going to start another thread entitled “Fruckin Fristed”. Come on over and we can help each other get through the denial and anger stages while everyone else figures out ways to save our businesses!

I’ve been drunk three times since this bill passed. If you haven’t, then you’re wrong.

Happy B-day Casino-A-Z, noshavingplease, murthy, and xgambler!
