NHL player accused of gambling on his own games

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is vehemently refuting allegations made by his wife that he has been gambling on his own NHL games. Anna Kane, whom Evander refers to as his, “soon-to-be ex-wife” made the bombshell accusations in a lengthy Instagram post over the weekend. Should Anna Kane’s bombshell story is found to contain even a kernel of truth, it would represent the biggest sports scandal of the regulated sports betting era in the United States.

The NHL player’s wife was clearly seething over the weekend as she made public a number of Instagram posts about Evander including one reading, “How does the NHL let a compulsive gambling addict still play when he’s obviously throwing games with bookies to win money?” she went on to further accuse her husband of traveling with his bookie and abandoning her while she carries his unborn child.

Evander Kane filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and has claimed to be $28 million in debt. Though, to be clear, there has been no suggestion that his bankruptcy is gambling related.

Any suggestion of a player in any sport gambling on his or her own sport is extremely serious and NHL officials released a statement on Saturday night saying that they were investigating the matter.

Evander is vehemently denying the charges by the woman he describes as his, “soon-to-be ex-wife”. On his own Instagram post, reported on by the New York Post, he said, “I love the game of Hockey and would never do any of what was alleged. I love forward to cooperating with the league’s investigation, having my name fully cleared and looking forward to this upcoming season.”

So far there’s no word on how long the NHL’s investigation could take.
