New Jersey investigating DraftKings championship controversy

New Jersey gaming regulators are looking into the outcome of the recently completed DraftKings Sports Betting National Championship after a player narrowly missed out on a $1 million payday due to an allegedly late payout.
Controversy surrounding the betting tournament broke out Sunday after a player named Rufus Peabody (aka Opti5624) lost his first place spot in the tournament after he was unable to place a bet on the Saints/Eagles game in a timely manner. Peabody claims that the reason he was unable to place his final wager was that DraftKings was unable to pay out his winning wager on the Patriots/Rams game before the next game started.
In DraftKings’ defense, the gap between the games turned out to be all of four minutes, and Peabody didn’t walk home empty handed. The unlucky/lucky player took home $330,000 for placing third in the tournament. Furthermore, Peabody does not seem to be a party to any complaints about the tournament or DraftKings. That said, New Jersey gaming regulators are still looking into the tournament to insure that no laws or regulations were violated.
DraftKings is standing by its actions during the tournament in a statement to the press reading, “We recognize that in the rules the scheduled end of betting coincided very closely to the finish of the of Patriots-Chargers game. While we must follow our contest rules, we sincerely apologize for the experience several customers had where their bets were not graded in time to allow wagering on the Saints-Eagles game. We will learn from this experience and improve upon the rules and experience for future events.”
It’s worth noting that regulators are not accusing the company of wrong doing of any kind and nerve-wracking waits for payments are fact of life for most sports betting enthusiasts.
