Lottoland scores win in Australian lottery battle

Lottoland, Australia’s embattled digital lottery operator, scored a big win in an Australian court recently when a judge ruled their products are not games of chance. It’s a critical determination for a company that’s seen its products attacked by Aussie news peddlers, who aren’t too keen on sharing the lottery market with new competitors.
Lottoland’s big win happened some time in July, but is only now coming to life thanks to reporting by CalvinAyre.com. According to their report, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) declared Lottoland’s digital lottery products to be a game of chance. Had this decision held, the company would have been locked out of most Australian markets, including the critical New South Wales market.
Though details on the judge’s decision are scarce, Lottoland CEO Luke Brill recently released a press release saying, “The Supreme Court of NSW has today confirmed that Lottoland Australia’s Jackpot Betting products are fully compliant with Australian law.”
He went on to say, “Lottoland Australia has always maintained that ACMA’s view of our Jackpot Betting products is wrong, unfair, and uncompetitive—and today I am pleased to say that we have been vindicated. With this matter now settled, Lottoland Australia can finally get on with what it does best – providing new and exciting products that Australian punters love.”
While Brill can be forgiven for being enthusiastic over Lottoland’s court victory, their battle isn’t likely over just yet. The company is fighting some very entrenched forced, Aussie news peddlers and their monopoly on lottery ticket sales, and it’s unlikely they’re going to give up their fight any time soon.
