Several Fresno State basketball players are under investigation by the NCAA for allegedly betting on their play on daily fantasy sports (DFS) sites. According to ESPN.com, junior forward Mykell Robinson and a group of his associates were regularly betting on their play, including the under line.
Details of the investigation are still scarce, though whatever investigators have uncovered is serious enough to remove Robinson from playing for the Bulldogs. The forward was pulled from the roster after the team’s January 11 game against Nevada.
Though Robinson has not commented publicly on the investigation, Fresno State senior guard Jalen Weaver admitted to ESPN.com that he had wagered on his own over/under in a game against New Mexico State on December 31. Weaver said he bet $50 that he would score more than 11 points in the game and wound up scoring 13.
“I just made a bad decision, and I shouldn’t even have gotten involved with that. Now, I’m obviously paying for it. I bet on a game I played in, but I never tried to sabotage the season. I never bet on us to lose, never bet my unders,” he said. Weaver has been removed from the team and has entered the transfer portal.
Though Fresno State has not made any official comment on the matter, the NCAA did issue a broad statement saying, “Sports betting issues are on the rise and while the Association, conferences and schools are doing everything possible to protect the games and the students who play them, it’s clear the types of bets offered and the prevalence of unregulated betting markets impede our efforts.”
