WordPress comments spam

pjotter asked 3 years ago
Having a WordPress site, I have probably had thousands of spam comments – many each day.

They are of course caught as spam comments by Akismet and I will have to approve them, if they were to be published on my site. Of course I just delete them, but it takes some of my precious time once in a while.

I don’t understand what it achieved by posting all these spam posts about medicine etc. etc. I can’t imagine anyone would approve them, so what is the purpose?

I have received very few “real” comments, so I closed the option of commenting, but I am not sure if that is the right thing to do…

I know what you mean.
Sadly, I ignore all comments.

I was also wondering if there is an easier way to trash them.
My controls only allow me to select 20 comments at a time.

(I also use a wp-spam plugin that catches most of them – as well as requiring the complete lists of comment options before wp will accept them).

(there are also a lot of auto-approve blogs out there, so some do get through)

Right or wrong??

I know you said you are using akismet, but are you doing any user validation? For example, e-mail verification link before the comment gets published?

Thanks for the suggestion!
A “wordpress email verification plugin’ seems much better then just letting them ‘sit there’ after posting a comment

Even if a spammer uses a spambot to automatically validate the email address, at least I’ll get a hit.
If they manually review my it, I get another chance to sell ’em my affiliate links.

If it’s real, so much the better!

Is there any way to send spam to trash in WP faster?

This is one of the best ones that I have found. http://txfx.net/wordpress-plugins/subscribe-to-comments/

It’s the same one that we use here at CAP. I like it because it allows users to subscribe to future comments as well, which has a tendency to increase your repeat visits and time on site.

Excellent!!
If the comment is real, that would be a great addition.

Thanks. Will have a closer look at it. Another idea could be to let people post with the facebook login. There must be a plugin for that.

There is. Facebook actually has a commenting plugin that you can integrate with your blog. Downsides are that not everyone wants to have their real names displayed on your site, especially if it is associated with gambling

I started a wp blog in December of this past year and get hammered with spammers – I have the comments set to admin approval so none of them ever get posted, but its a daily task going in and trashing them all just the same. Its amazing what some idiots out there will try to get posted on someone elses sites.

Be nice to be able to treat these comment spammers the same as email spammers and have their ISPs take action against them.

There is an Empty Spam button in the Spam Comments section. Don’t you have this over comments on your right?
