HVDB asked 3 years ago
Hit (again) by Google,

Anyone could explain me why our website: http://www.onlinegamblingpal.com

Which was google.com, ranked place 5 (online gambling) a few months ago, fell to the 100th place?

We daily update our website with fresh unique content

Any help would be fantastic, Google is driving me crazy.

All my backlinks are gone.

The good news is my retail site moved into the #1 spot after being #2 for years.

Update “Dewey” has just settled down and each time Google do a change, they usually adjust the ranking factors. Example: if your position was based on inbound links, and Google reduced their importance in ranking factors, then a hit would be expected. Similarly if you used paid links – chances are these get hit a bit more every update. *

Trouble is no-one really knows what Google is doing – its all “best guess”. In fact, the update was a bit of a surpprise to many as it was felt that Google had moved toward “everflux”. There’s even a doubt as to whether it was an algo change this time round.

* Interesting footnote for operators maybe: a lot of aff programs have their affiliate and banner links use the casino URL to boost inbounds. Someone suggested that these may possibly now be viewed as “paid links”. It’s possible that that could cause a negative SEO impact rather than a positive one.

Yahoo Site Explorer shows 985 inbound links for 327 pages on onlinegamblingpal.

For the top rated site in Google UK (onlinegambling dot co dot uk) YSE shows 122,500 links against 221 pages.

If you were showing in #5 for ‘online gambling’ then either:

1) you’ve lost a lot of backlinks all of a sudden (ie they’ve been discounted / removed) or

2) it was an anomaly (985 links wouldn’t get you in the top 50)

Keep getting good links. Due to future uncertainty, I wouldn’t be buying too many at this time.
