Google bot question

HenrikG asked 3 years ago
Hi,

Been googling around to see if there is a fixed list of IP’s out there that is verified as google bots. The reason is that we dont want them to count as clicks on the affiliate stats since it gives the wrong impression.

It is not like google is going to create a player account, and we want to be able to show the most accurate stats for you guys. So as it is now when our affiliates check their last 10 clicks on their links, it might be 3-4 google bot IP’s there as well.

So is there a list, or any other good way to get around it?

Thanks
Henrik

I’m not sure if they have a fixed IP or not, but I have seen some programs that are able to recognize them. They don’t try and pretend they are real people, so I’m sure there is a way you can do this.

Thanks for the input, after looking into the different solutions suggested from you and other affiliates and AM’s it has been decided that we will go with a solution that includes using the user-agent to see if it is a bot or not.

So hopefully the stats will be even better, with a more accurate hit stats within a weeks time.

Cheers

I think hwat you have suggested below is the safest bet… but remember there is more than one Google user agent too, see here for a start:

http://www.user-agents.org/- you can trawl thru manually, or use the search in top right of the site (obviously search for the word google) – THis search may not get em all tho! – there is an xml sheet in the top left, you can download and sort in excel maybe ;-)

Remember that if you use adsense, you should be especially careful when playing with user agents.
