    Uhm. Australia. Gambling celebrity. Let’s see now. Hachem?

    Anyway see you all here. Bring sunscreen.

    Shangri La is in a great location and I stayed there many years ago. Pretty good.

    I’ll post some Sydney travel tips and I’m sure my fellow Sydneysiders will add theirs.

    First tip:
    DO NOT FLY UNITED. Rather cut yourself with a blunt object. It has the same effect but at least it’s over real quick. If you can go Qantas it’s much better.

    I would have thought the best travel trip would have been go to Queensland…… :colgate:

    Great tip justred

    Qantas, Emirates or Thai airways are my recommendations…

    Another thing you wont need to worry about in Sydney is pickpockets and crime..
    I would feel extremely safe walking down the street at a ridiculous hour of the morning by myself. The only thing we have is junkies, but if you don’t go anywhere near the cross you should be fine..

    Darling Harbour has some awesome clubs…
    A couple include The Docks, Pontoon, Cargo Bar.. my favourite used to be the Daintree but they closed that down apparently. There is also a sportsbar right there for any sports fanatics.

    Another couple of good bars in the city: Zeta Bar (@ the Hilton), Europa Bar, Venetian Bar.
    Ive also heard good things about Ivy, although never been there.. The Establishment is also poopular..

    In the east, there is the Eastern at Bondi Junction, Coogee Bay Hotel, Bondi Road Hotel. The list goes on.

    Kings Cross has a reputation for clubs too, although you have to be in a particular “scene” to enjoy yourself there, and judging by the affs I met and saw at the parties in Barcelona, I would say that not many people would enjoy the area.

    Most of our pubs are called hotels here.. So if you walk past somewhere that says “Johns hotel”, likely its a pub.. which means, lots of beer.

    Tourist stuff includes the main things: Harbour Bridge, which you can climb and watch the sun go down with a 360 degree view of Sydney harbour which is amazing btw..
    Sydney Opera House.
    The infamous Bondi Beach and Iceburgs
    Sydney Zoo – awesome
    Centrepoint tower (awesome view, rotating restaurant)
    Luna Park – has rides and attractions, right on the harbour.
    The rocks and paddys markets

    You can catch the ferry from the zoo over to darling harbour..
    Lots of stuff to do in cirqular quay too.. which is right next to the rocks and opera house.

    If you feel like travelling out west you can go to the olympic village and see where the 2000 Olympics were held.. They have concerts etc there now. Rugby grand finals…
    There are also some factory outlets over there – great for cheap, cheap shopping.

    All in all, there is a crapload of stuff to do in Sydney. Its a big place.. You can get a train to anywhere that is worth visiting, or a bus to anywhere else..
    Things aren’t too expensive.. It all depends on where you come from I guess.. I think currency conversion is approximately
    1EUR = ~1.50AUD,
    1GBP = ~2.5AUD,
    1USD = ~1.10AUD,
    CAD = ~ 1.20AUD.

    And I forgot to mention, Australia has some pretty hot women (Jennifer Hawkins for example), not to mention the awesome accent :P

    Is that in Australia? :roflmao:

    PS if you plan to go to Queensland on your trip down here make sure you get Banjo lessons beforehand else if you can’t play “Me-and-my-two-half-brother-cousins-my-sister-married” in C Sharp, they won’t let you through the border.

    The problem with Queensland is that you guys don’t speak English like the rest of us…
    :roflmao:

    We do have to give you that though… your beaches are spectacular up in the Whitsundays..

    Sure – they are spectacular. I thought the Whitsundays are part of NSW? Like colonised or something? :angel:

    You guys have fun!

    Diana thats such a shame…

    If the weather is anything during the conference like it is now, you guys are in for a treat let me tell you!

    To give you an idea.
    It is the start of the second month of spring here (so still 2 months until summer).
    I am sitting in an air cond office.. I walked outside to get lunch and it was like a heat wave.. reminded me of the dry heat back in Greece last year… Only it was 46 degrees there… Felt like 46 degrees today, but it was only 31-35 degrees. I’m SO excited about summer..
    The unusual thing about the heat outside today is that it’s usually humid when its this hot… But it was very dry. I say “Very Nice” :)

    So everyone, make sure you bring your togs (aussie for swimsuit, bathing suit, swimmers etc). Its gonna be a hot one!

    Also, just checked out the Shangri-la and the rooms look amazing, not to mention the evening view over the opera house and harbour bridge.. very nice indeed – good choice Alex ;)

    I think this is going to be one hell of a conference :)

    To help some non aussies understand our language when coming down here, thought id post this for you all..

    http://www.aussieslang.org/
    http://www.dunway.com/html/aussie_slang.html

    Couple of sites that will tell you what a couple of our words mean.

    Most names here are shortened… For example, my name is actually Renata, but my family just decided to call me Renee.. Then Renee gets shortened to Ren, Nee, Nay, etc.

    Sharon = Shazza = Shaz
    Cheryl = Chezza = Chez
    Anthony = Tony = Tone
    Barry = Bazza = Baz
    Etc.

    We shorten names of stores and places…

    What most people call a gas station, we call a service station, shortened to a Servo.
    What you guys call a Liquor store, we call a bottle shop, shortened to Bottle-O.
    Place eg, I live in a place called Wollongong, shortened to The Gong.
    There is a place there called North Wollongong Hotel. Shortened to the North Gong Pub.

    So chances are, if you can’t understand something we say, its a shortened word. Yeah, we’re lazy in our speech. Most of you probably realised that when you met me.

    Actually one thing that is very important (and i realised this when I was in Barcelona)…

    If someone says ‘I’ve got the ****s’ or ‘You give me the ****s’ they dont mean literally.. They mean they are angry, or you make them angry. LOL

    EDIT: BTW Thanks to Graham for the links above…
