low backlinks in google

Diceman asked 3 years ago
took me forever but noticed this the other day… out of hundreds of links google only shows me having 4 backlinks!!!
Anyone know why this could be?

Try yahoo webmaster for a more accurate count. I think google purposefully obfuscates the link numbers.

log into webmaster tools and check your BLs there..

the old rule was and still might be – only PR4 links show up as backlinks – unless it’s real juicy backlink then it won’t because all your competitors will know.

I have a website (non-gambling related) I have a link to it from a PR7 page – it does not show up as a backlink

Google’s public backlink count is rather useless. The accurate data is within Webmaster Tools, but you can only check it for sites you own. If you want a more accurate count of backlinks for other websites, Open Site Explorer is your best bet, Yahoo Site Explorer is ok as well.

thank you everyone actually linksmanager kinda helped me with this.. strange thing is if I do link:free-online-casinos.com I only get 3 links and if I do it like link: free-online-casinos.com then it will show other results. my issue now is figuring out why I am not listed well

google only indexes your quality backlinks (high relevance percentage on the linking page’s content). unlike yahoo, they index almost all of the backlinks to your site, except for the irrelevant pages. google’s index and PR update are also late by 2 weeks to 1 month, since they only count the quality backlinks, also depends on the google bot’s schedule in crawling your site. just always update your contents regularly (2-3x a week).

I always used to think that content was king but recently I have started to see that the main factor is links, links and more links. Of course it is important to have good content as well but I have seen sites with completely static content, and not much of it, rank amazingly well in the serps for years. After changing my focus more towards link building from content creation I have seen my sites rank better in serps and also have much better PR. I’m now doing a ratio of about 15% content to 85% link building and until I see a dip I’ll carry on. I wish the search engines would focus more on content but in my experience it really isn’t such a big factor.

Just remember, links are important for building rankings for competitive keywords, while content is important for attracting long-tail search terms. I think the debate of content vs. links gets people confused thinking it should be done one way or the other when in reality both is the answer. In order to build a strong website, you need high quality and a good quantity of links (especially in this industry), once a website has some strength, then the addition of good quality content targeted to long-tail search terms is helpful in increasing traffic incrementally.

Google doesn’t show all your backlinks from the command, but they index them ALL.
Webmaster Tools will give you a better count from Google.
The PR4 qualification and that a link has to be quality are both myths.
Site Explorer over reports .. show links from images and hot-linked files as well as unlinked URLs contained within content.

If you really want to start looking at your link portfolio use Google, Yahoo, Majestic SEO and possibly LinkScape … do not rely upon a single source

yeah i prefer to use backlinkwatch.(dotcom) They seem to be the most accurate, and they don’t have all the tags and rubbish that yahoo includes.
