Is SEO Dying Out & Social Media Taking Over?

JillO asked 3 years ago
I know that this has been a forecast for about 2 years running now, but is anyone starting to see this trend?

Let’s face it, over the past 5 years web publishing has been so heavily reliant on SEO that finding the right keywords some times take precedence over the actual content. Although Google Panda has tried to clean up the problem it’s still out there.

Because of this, do you think there is more valued content coming from Social Media channels, and the opportunity that Social Media may become a larger traffic generating source for affiliates?

I think SEO is still going strong – but what we are probably seeing is a more well rounded approach to branding and traffic?

Also I think people look into social media more and more, because its results are instant, rather then waiting for G to reindex your site.

If you sell paper boxes, I think it would be a bit artificial to focus your marketing efforts around social media. I think we’re starting to see a more natural web. Products and services that are worthy of water cooler chat need to focus on social media. Besides generating traffic faster and fortifying your SEO efforts, it supports branding and adds a very powerful group wisdom effect.

Social media is part of SEM as I see it – but its not SEM. Maybe a new term and acronym is needed for what we use social media for.. SMM Social Media Marketing?

SEO
SEM
SMM

I agree 100%

The real issue for us is to try and figure out which Social Media sites and services will last well into the future.

SMM sounds great <span title=” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” /> and no I don’t think that SEO is dead or even dying just changing

Very true points shared by all… Fonzi- totally agree with you. Since Social Media is growing as such a powerhouse of a traffic channel, it is imperative that people measure their efforts so they can find out how Facebook traffic compares to Twitter traffic compares to StumbleUpon traffic, etc.

Yes, SEO is inching towards its death. The future would have intelligent search engines which would not only eliminate the SEO practices but also would be able provide the natural, unique and relevant results.

This really comes down to your target audience.. Eg Facebook is not #1 in Russia, contakta is, orkut is more popular in India.

And then are we going after traffic, or branding, or building a fan base of followers.

It sounds overwhelming but it’s not really.

For me twitter doesn’t work, or Facebook pages, but Facebook profiles work for me. But it requires 16hrs a day, 7 days a week of updates without looking like you are spamming to your fb followers.
