“there not what they used to be ….”

BB1 makes some very valid points –

Personally, I have NEVER been to one of these conventions! I have long thought that programs shave more during/prior to conventions to pay for their trip and all the partying. I recall not that long ago there were like 3-4 in consecutive months!

Furthermore, I believe I am capable of designing a website, capable of SEO, capable in a lot of areas … I don’t think flying across the world / or nation to sit down and have a beer with someone – no a group of people for 2 hours is justified by $550 + all the shaving!

Can I afford to go? DUH! Do I believe it’s worth it? I haven’t seen/heard anything that would say yes.

Would my going actually get me a more honest cut of what I rightfully have coming anyway as a result of drinking a beer with someone? I doubt it!

I too am still looking for a justification …

Listen you two will NEVER go to a convention so why even discuss this?

There is nothing anyone could or should say to you to “convince” you to come to a conference or industry event. So other then busting balls what is this all about?

Many of us enjoy getting together with our peers, finally putting faces to the names we see online and networking with new people.

Many of us are happy to meet the affiliate managers who we work with all year long.

Many of us are thankful we earn enough money in this business to support our families very comfortably and we no longer have to go to a J.O.B. every day.

Many of us actually like the casino operators who are our partners and have shared a wonderful business opportunity with us and come more then half way around the world to see US

Instead of searching for everything bad about this business at every chance you get you might consider where you would be without it.

If you dont want to make new friends or network or meet with business partners or get together for drinks and parties then by all means stay home. You KNOW you’re going to do it anyways so why be a couple of Negative Nates and rain on everyone elses parade?

I had honestly considered going to this!

I was and am looking for a good reason to attend! Thats WHY I began the thread … The mere opportunity to meet and greet is not justified by spending a few thousand dollars to fly clear across the world / country to drink a few beers.

Lou are you going to this event?

Nice of you to ask us not to be negative using a negative tone yourself! I would like to think this past weeks goings-on have lead to this post, but Im not sure.

I cant believe you would more or less bash both myself and bb1 when at least in my case you incorrectly assumed my intent.

Read the posts Arkyt.

I have attended NUMEROUS conferences and events and organized a get together of over 60 people in Miami a few months ago. We will be having ANOTHER Miami Spring Break again next year. I would DEFINATELY be in Las Vegas at this event if I werent on a cruise that week for my mother’s birthday. Next year I have every intention of being in Vegas.

I am sorry to snap at you but comments like :

” don’t think flying across the world / or nation to sit down and have a beer with someone – no a group of people for 2 hours is justified by $550 + all the shaving!”

“If you wanted to get right down to it, though I’ve never been, I cannot think of one positive reason for going that would justify spending the money. (though I would like to meet some of the people from here in person)

If you can’t network using the same means we all use the other 359 days of the year, then you likely aren’t going to make any kind of better impression in person.

for my money, I wouldn’t pay more than $25, maybe $50 at the very most; to hear anybody in this business talk. “

struck me as negative and probably a cold bucket of water thrown on all the people who are going and are excited to see their friends and party a little. That may not have been your intent and if so I appologize.

Now quit being a couple of sour pusses ;)

Miami was advertised as a party / spring break / social get together! I dont think your event charges an admission fee? This one does and thus I am looking for a good reason to go.

and yes “don’t think flying across the world / or nation to sit down and have a beer with someone – or a group of people for 2 hours is justified by $550 + all the shaving!” IS HOW I FEEL!

You yourself just posted a shaving image in the poll regarding convention shaving … All I want Lou is to make an honest living – if I am being shaved to beat hell by my so called “partners” – moreso when paying to go to events why should I go?

My intent was NOT to belittle those already planning on attending. Thats their choice and I fully respect that! All I wanted was a satisfactory reason to attend myself.

ANYONE can email / call me any time (communicate) …. we dont need to spend $2000 a piece to fly across the world to do it. I am however sure it would be plenty of fun … but if it didnt result in me making more money – was it a wise business decision?

ditto.

and actually Lou, I’ve been comtemplating going for some time now. To assume we would never go is beyond my thinking as to where you came up with that;

I am extremely well travelled and in fact have been to every state in the US except 4.

I just don’t like the idea of HAVING to go in order to get a fair shake; or to feel like I got my money’s worth for the shaving I take …. good golly Ark, was it really 3 or 4 in row.

I thought it seemed like that; but didn’t dare say it.

I resent anytime somebody or some situation forces my play.

and any negativeness (of which I admit) was aimed not at ruining anybody’s trip. but rather at the people or forces behind these “get togethers” which yes, I ultimately am paying for; and I don’t care if its only $20. It aint right.

it would be different if there were truly a good reason for attending, and while I completely agree it is a good way to meet the people you work with;

although I’ve not met them in person, I deal with them all the time. Why would I want my vacation from my everyday toils; to include spending the majority of my vacation going thru a bunch of pleasantries which personally, mean very little to me. And with people whom I work with all the time. Its like leaving your job to go hang out with everybody from work.

Its what a person does and how they treat others on a day by day basis that counts with me, not whether they’re willing to slap me on the back and buy me a beer twice a year.

and to be quite upfront and truthful. If I went to one of these events and happened to see the wrong persons; I’d likely lose my self control and end up needing bail money because I am truly afraid of what I’d do if I ran onto a couple of SOBs that have screwed me (safely) from a distance.

As for the $550 rego fee, wouldn’t you be able to call it a “business trip” and claim the entire thing on tax?

Some of the guys and girls in the industry (Operator, Aff Managers and Affiliates) have become really good friends and this is a great oppertunity to catch up with each other again.

This is one of the main reasons I attend.

(though I would like to meet some of the people from here in person)

and Ark wrote

so neither of us is saying that wouldn’t be cool, but ya know what? we can do that for $550 less than is necessary.

[said with tongue in cheek] bout the only person in this biz I’d pay any real money to listen to is Spear

[not said with tongue in cheek because I’m hoping this WILL be his price if I ever get to meet him in person] …. and I’m nearly certain I could do that for the price of a good bottle of his favorite beverage.

Hi again,

Now I’m about half tempted to go. what are the exact dates and hotel most everyone will be meeting at?

thanks in advance for your reply

edited to add:

I’ll be spending my $550 on plane tickets

there’s no way I’d shell out another $500 on the opportunity to sit thru a day’s worth of lectures.

wait a min. Who do I contact about being a speaker? this must surely pay a nice wage.

I think most of the details about dates and stuff are available at http://www.casinoaffiliateconvention.com. The event is being held at the Excalibur, IIRC.

Considering that the average price of a good bottle of my favorite beverage in Vegas starts with a ZERO, I’d say you would be getting one hell of a bargain! A better price would be a meal somewhere (which is awfully cheap in Vegas anyhow) because by the time you see me I’ll probably be broke LMFAO. Just kidding…

I am only a panelist at the conference this time – Asia is not particularly booming just yet so no point in me talking about that – so Marc lets me sit on the panel just to let me stir the shit :) Speakers’ wages are about the same as the average price of a good bottle of my favorite beverage in Vegas.

Seriously – at some point in time I’d like to get together with you guys and gals, separately or together as a group – so it’s really just a matter of convenience. No purchase necessary to enter – simply bring a fully-stuffed SASE with lots of green inside :)

Anyhow, bb1webs and Arkyt – the $550 is a bargain by any standard, because most conferences start at about $1200 or so – on top of that, this is specifically geared towards affs, and you’ll get to meet tons of colleagues and operators, and during the panel which I will be taking part in (the last one) there will be lots of free beer.

Not to mention the mud wrestling :)

Though you may wonder about whether you got any specific value from that $550, I guarantee you four things:

1. Lots of fun
2. Lots of information
3. Lots of new friends to share ideas with
4. Over the long term (a few months, let’s say) – you will realize that you got a huge bargain.

The $550 you spend on the conference will in the long run be worth much more than the cost of a bottle of my favorite beverage in Vegas.
