Most affiliate programs do this. I link to a file on my site called click.php where I track all my clicks and redirect all my affiliate links through. In robots.txt I disallow the click.php file.

This is the code they want us to use from now on for text links.

    Can you believe this.

They want us to do the SEO for them and give them great links from our sites for nothing !.

Even though we use redirects, I am thinking of just not promoting them.

“We do this for SEO purposes”, Thats the response i got in the mail.

    No way hoze.

the no follow i have used some time but i think i need to make it on all the links… a matter of find and replace.

But just to be on the safe side… that shouldt mess up tracking code should it? that why i have not used it.

I’m confused, what is the problem with this, don’t you make money if a visitor to your site clicks on the link and signs up????

I agree, we are putting ourselves out of business by carrying links like that.

Although – does google give any weight to links with aff codes in the first place?

Google will see that as a direct link with no aff code..

    Dom

    look at the link code

they are using an invisible image to do the tracking by adding a cookie. The actual href has no affiliate tags on it. Thats why this is really unfair.

With the tag Google normally sees that as an ad link with tracking, without, as is the case with the code we were given to use. Well thats just not on.

I emailed them the fact that this is not fair practise and they said, it is as and I quote

“As we grow, You will grow”

do they honestly think that they will get away with this.

Let me repeat, NO WAY HOSE.

Again. I urge everyone to use redirects or NO FOLLOW. If you do not know how, feel free to PM me and Ill help you out

    cheers

It’s actually suggested by google to link to an affi program, or any other sponsored link with a nofollow.

I do believe they have that backwards ;) perhaps it was a language barrier? (tehehe)

    EDIT:

I’ve rethought my position on the above – “As We Grow , You Will Grow”.

That means I should get a link from THEM right? Now that’s a good idea! I think in addition to payments, whether are flat fee based or affiliate based, we should require a backlink! So that as ‘They Grow.. We Grow! ‘:roflmao:

Using a nofollow will keep google from transferring link juice but yahoo and msn will usually still follow these links.

they are using an invisible image to do the tracking by adding a cookie. The actual href has no affiliate tags on it. Thats why this is really unfair.

If thats the case then they are going to lose a ton of affiliates. Firefox blocks third party cookies by default. I have used a lot of cookie stuffing techniques in the past and I still use them but research has shown that approximately 40% of my visitors had third party cookies disabled. This means that you won’t get credit for about 40% of the traffic you send to their casino.

I just want someone to give me the code to use on text links. If I use the affiliate tag attached to the image source it will take them to the banner location and not the website. What am I missing here.

I will definitely use nofollow with those links. That’s pretty lame…it is basically saying help us for free so we can eventually cut you out once we rank for your UB terms.
