I live about 15 miles south of Mims. I’ve got a new home in the south of Titusville all concret rated at 150. No generator. I’m not sure what the wife wants to do. We have her parents and my mother to think about also. Also a pregant daughter and 2 sons to think about. I’m in Tampa working now, heading home this afternoon.

InactiveLou,
I know you don’t like to fly, but you (and everyone else down there) lock it all up and get the hell out of there!
Seriously, friends… it’s just stuff. Take what’s special to you, put everything else in the most secure room in the house, make sure you insurance is up-to-date, and GO!
Just start heading toward Las Vegas and wait for me there… I’ll buy you all a beer…

InactiveSTAY safe my Florida friends … Let this one turn out to sea!
As everyone has already stated things can be replaced – you staying in the line of fire can not help protect them, but you can protect yourself.

InactiveI agree J Todd, this one seems real bad. Lives are more important.
But if you do stay, prayers will be all of you.

vladcizsolMemberThanks Guys
Most of us are locked in to this now and even if we wanted we cant leave. The airport will be closed tomorrow and all flights are booked. The highways are jammed with people and if you tried to outdrive it now you would most likely be caught in the storm in your car. We are going to batten down the hatches and pray. One thing I did find today that I am POSITIVELY going to invest in at my new home is here:
http://www.roll-a-way.com/home.html
I know it aint cheap, but I think all of us Florida webmasters should definately consider this solution for the future.

InactiveLou,
Those roll-away’s are great!
When I was a teenager growing up in Houston, we would rent beach houses in Galveston every summer. All the beach houses there have them.
You can have huge, bay windows overlooking the ocean, then “flip” the roll-aways into place and rest easy.

vladcizsolMemberYep, they look like a god send in a storm. I dont know why they arent more prevalent here in Central Florida. I guess we had too many years of good luck and it made us complacent.
Well, we probably will never be hit with another storm like Francis in my lifetime, but it’s still going to be worth every penny just for the peace of mind. I am kinda glad I thought of this now before they started breaking ground on the new house. I am calling the builder tomorrow and asking them to price these puppies in.

InactiveI just returned from Gainsville (North Central Florida) this afternoon. I had to come back to South Florida to shutter up my house down there. Traffic North bound on the Turnpike is bumper to bumper.
So now my shutters are drawn, all my supplies are in place and now it’s time to see what happens.
Once again, best wishes to my Florida, Georgia, and Alabama pals!

InactiveThose rollaways are standard equipment for single family houses in Germany. They are used for insulation at night (people lower them every night) and they are pretty burglar proof also. You can lock them down from the inside and It would take I don’t what to try to cut through those things. They are tough.
I grew up with them and was so surprised that the US didn’t have them everywhere.
