Cynthia Carley the owner of GPWA posted the following. We wish her the best of luck in her new endevors:
There’s a time in our lives for everything. Just as it was the time for me to start GPWA when I did, it’s now time for me to move on.
I’m giving you all a couple of days advance notice of this, then I’ll go public with it. The sale is open to anyone that wants it and if there’s not a buyer by May 31st, I’ll just close the doors and destroy the database.
Then:
One of the interested members is getting an appraisal done.
The thing is, I really have no idea. GPWA’s value is in the eye of the beholder. If it goes to the right person, the value will be immense – if it goes to the wrong person, the value will disappear.
I’ve been surprised by the number of current members that are interested in it, so I think I’m going to let the members vote as to who gets it.
Current Income is about $23,400 annually (with 2 more programs poised to join)
Monthly hosting is +/- $100
Links Manager is $20April 16, 2004 at 2:42 am #648050AnonymousInactiveAt one time the GPWA had over 27 programs featured now it’s maybe a 12 … its clear the debacle(s) several months ago really had an impact on the once prosperous concept. I doubt shed be selling if the group still had any potential at all – the way I see it is she’s trying to get the last little bit out of it (for herself) before it hits “total” rock bottom.
Furthermore, I believe the damage she’s done to the “brand” may hinder any potential for future successes for the “brand” GPWA.
I imagine it’s a big gamble and am eager to see which high-roller is willing to take the chance. I could of course be wrong – maybe its a goldmine
There gonig to vote on who gets it huh? OH NOOOOOOOO!
April 16, 2004 at 6:20 am #648056AnonymousGuestI think that, run right, the GPWA would do very well.
I wish it were run as a non-profit, as a true association, though. As soon as anyone is making money from something, it loses it’s value as an association, becomes a business. Personal agendas tarnish the goal.
Why don’t we all pool some money together, buy the damn thing, and elect a president?
And then run it entirely as an cooperative association – non profit. Membership dues to cover the costs, including paying back the initial investors (so that no one ‘owns’ it in any percentage) and perhaps hiring someone to maintain the website.
April 16, 2004 at 11:18 am #648059vladcizsolMemberI think Arkyt is correct in his assumptions. A quick reveiw of Alexa shows that GPWA fell off a cliff since last July. They have less then 1/7th of the traffic they previously had. That’s not the sort of growth one sees with a business on its way UP. I think Cindy is making a wise decision to get out now while there is still a little value left that she can capitalize on.

Arkyt is probably correct that they now have
a negative value goodwill.
April 16, 2004 at 3:12 pm #648068vladcizsolMemberDVS indicated hes bidding on it, though I think hes after the backlinks. I would be curious to see what it ends up fetching.

/JanetApril 19, 2004 at 1:38 pm #648116AnonymousInactiveWell, I offered to buy it before July last year sometime when Cindy stepped down and went into hiding and GPWA was going through “reorganization”, and I kept the offer standing for a long time.
Today, with most of the major affiliate programs gone and a good number of the remaining ones telling me that their presence is a non profitable media buy, plus the Alexa ratings which have been going downhill ever since last July, I am definitely passing.
While the concept was a very good one, and I spent much of my energy to benefit GPWA and its members for over a year, Arkyt is right.
The “brand” has suffered so much that it would be more likely to find success in starting a new brand. You can’t have a professional organization whose leader is so belligerent that she gets banned from all major message boards. The word of that and some unsavory conduct at sucks has spread throughout the industry, and the name is tainted.
The database is huge but also very outdated – current posting by knowledgeable people has shrunk to a mere trickle compared to CAP.
Back links – good idea. There is some value in that.
GPWA was an era – but it has little value anymore.
Me thinks I will leave things as they are.
This isn’t the first time Cindy has called it quits – I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t just another attempt to get attention.
April 19, 2004 at 3:59 pm #648123AnonymousInactiveI would think some of the Affiliate managers would be interested just to get the database of Webmasters to then promote their programs to.
What are your thoughts on that? I would of thought that there was some privacy issues when joing the group but I would not know for sure as I was never a member.

April 19, 2004 at 4:55 pm #648125AnonymousInactiveI don’t see a lot of point in that except for very new programs – all the large and medium sized programs already have the database of webmasters. There are a lot of non-performers in it too – just a few dozen performing webmasters.
I have a list of all the active members as of July last year – which contains the performing affiliates that are still around today and a bunch who are not.
I imagine there may be 50 addresses of interest there, and most all programs already have them.
I don’t know of any privacy agreement – but there may be one. I have kept the list private and not used it myself either – I have it because I used to send out notes when the board was down.
