This is the first I’ve heard of this. I’ve tried to google but can’t find any info on it. Can you give me a link?

I’m sorry that I don’t have a link, but I can assure you that is what I heard over the phone from an employee of the child support department.

I also saw the letter they sent out to my friend stating this fact AFTER they were notified that the person is permanently disabled and can never work to pay off the debt.

This really sucked because I wanted this friend to be able to visit me and my husband while we were in the Domincan Republic last year.

So as of last week my friend can NEVER leave the USA as long as they owe Uncle Sam!

You may be able to speak to someone at a number from this page.

Yes it is true. If you owe anything to the government you can’t leave the country. IRS, VA, student loans, anything.

I know that if you owe Uncle Sam any funds at any level (student loans, child support, taxes, etc) that they will not issue a passport until the debt is paid.

If you owe anything to the government you can’t leave the country. IRS, VA, student loans, anything.

To clarify, I think you are referring to “past due” debt — i.e. you defaulted on a student loan, or you never paid the child support that you were supposed to.

I obtained a passport without any problems, yet I am still making payments on my student loans.

This really sucked because I wanted this friend to be able to visit me and my husband while we were in the Domincan Republic last year.

Sorry about your friend, but if your friend can afford a trip to the Dominican Republic, then he/she can afford to pay off some of their debt. Also if he/she is well enough to travel, maybe they are well enough to start working again — even if it is only a part time job answering a phone or something….

Engineer – You are right. It’s for past due accounts.

Just because you are disabled does not mean you are DEAD and can’t travel or enjoy life does it?

No disrespect Engineer, but if we all had perfect lives then I can see your point, but sometimes bad stuff happend to good people. I know for a fact that my friend would like to be able to pay the debt so that they can travel at will and not have to get the “judgemental” comments.

I’ll see you at Spring Break! :chearlead

Going on a vacation and keeping a job is two different things.

Sorry GamTrak, I didn’t mean to offend. What you’ve said makes perfect sense; of course you are right. I guess I just assumed… and we all know what happens when people ASSUME….

See you at Spring Break, for sure!

I am prime example of what people with Disabilities can do.I have an assistant full time , Gina who makes it possible for me to work . My legs dont work but my brain certainly does .It is nice that you want to treat your friend to a vacation , if he is in a wheelchair like I am you need to do some research.I have ms WHEN I TRAVEL I TAKE MY MANUAL WHEELCHAIR. It sucks to get to a foreign country and find out you cannot charge the battery packs, been there and done that :)

There are situations where engineer is right too though ,I hate people who suck the system dry and say poor me .

    Not a problem Dave. :)

Hi casinobonusguy, just to be clear. The debt was being paid on until my friend was badly hurt in an accident that was no fault of their own several years ago.

This totally destroyed his career and changed his life at 50. BTW he does not get any money from the government.

As much taxes as I pay, I’m the first person to get upset about “freeloaders” and wasteful government spending so I feel where you are coming from, but that is not the case here.

A comment about 1) disability and 2) passports:

My husband came out of the Air Force as a computer operator, taught himself programming, worked 3 jobs for several years while he worked his way up and was Systems Analyst for a University when he was forced to retire on disability 10 years ago. He would still love to work even if it is only ‘answering phones’. But answering phones won’t pay the bills, medical costs are astronomical, he can’t be insured except through Medicare, and he isn’t allowed to earn over a certain small amount each year without impacting his retirement. That’s if he could do the job, which he can’t. I was forced to quit work to stay home and be care provider. (That’s when I started my affiliate business.)

We were audited and owed the IRS which we were paying on until he became disabled. (Did you know that the disabled person has to have not earned any income for 5 or 6 months before SS will kick in?) Once we were no longer able to make the agreed upon payments the IRS filed to take the money out of his SS check each month until paid off, which was (finally) in November of last year. That’s why I was so thrown about the passport information. I’m applying for passports for both my husband and myself knowing he’ll probably never use his but praying for the opportunity. And I’ll be damned if I get one without him. So now I’m hoping that the tax lien won’t cause problems or keep us from getting them. Just what I need, another opportunity to revisit the IRS.

I understand your situation completely .My homecare /attendant costs are $30,000 a year. If i had a ‘normal ‘ job i wouldnt be able to swing that either. And at 20 bux per hour it sometimes makes more sense for a spouse to stay home and care for the other. We went through all of that too.I would probably be in your situation if it was not for my Brother John creating something that I could do from home .John use to tell me we are either going to be rich or be in Jail LOL when he started flying to middle east and other parts of the world to buy things for our ebay store .

I would hope if you are making payments towards a debt they dont keep you hostage in your own country.

Great to see everyone so optimistic. Specially americans, figured we would all be looking for work instead of making plans for another big party. I guess you are all well trenched in the overseas markets and arent worried about your futures in this market.

Have one or two for me. :shots:
