    Hi Guys

I’m very interested in this thread because we could add the referrer url of where a player was delivered from without too much trouble. We already collect this data so our main concern is how best to display it.

Currently on our player stats you can see the games the player has been playing by hovering your mouse over their account number. What we are thinking of doing is also adding the referrer url to that information, so after the game play charts you would see ‘delivered from: http://www.domain.com/page.htm’.

The main problem with collecting the referrer url data is that in many cases there is no data to collect. Banner and click tracking software often use redirects which can lead to no referrer url data being collected. Similarly if an affiliate pops one of our casinos up on their website and a player downloads and plays, there will be no referrer url information as the popup was the start of the user’s session.

In these cases though we could just display a ‘no referrer url information availble’ message and make it clear that it’s not always possible to obtain referrer url information.

    What do you guys think?

    Best regards,

    Tim Whyles

I think it would be extremely worthwhile for not only players, but also clicks in general as well. Tim, I would certainly start promoting Wagershare casinos again if you put this into action.

‘no referrer url’ is pretty common and that is not an issue so long as it’s true.

    For all aff programs:

I am sure I am not the only one who stopped promoting programs who had limited statistics. I’ve dropped at least 10 programs who didn’t have enough statistics for me to work with. SO – the better your stats are and the more information they give us to track our promotions, the better off for both of us.

    Thanks for your time.

    Congratulations !!!

You are the very first company – to step up to the plate and make a responsible offer to aid affiliates.

I agree with kwblue. The “no ref” is a very common thing. Sometimes – that category – I just see it listed as “bookmarked”. No big deal.

The most positive part of your post was:

    “What do you guys think?”

You ARE certainly asking the right questions and let us know if and when you implement your stats – and I’ll join your program – in a heart beat.

    Thanks Tim

    and oh p.s.

Who gives a drip if the big boys make changes. They probably never will do anything to benefit the affiliate – but it’s the small guys – like WagerShare – growing companies – who will make a difference in my mind for the future of this Industry.

We’ve been talking with the developers and have got a green light for the referrer stats urls. There are some complications to work out and because of the vast amount of data involved, we need to test the load implications on the servers. That said, we’re hoping to get the system implemented as soon as possible.

    Cheers

I overlooked last night your very valuable points – said in:

“However, the main problem in our industry is this… (IMO):

We are dealing with affiliate programs who deal with Casino Properties who deal with Casino Software Providers. That convolution is wherein the problem lies.

First, in the fact that many of the Casino Software Providers do not provide as meaningful of statistics to their Affiliate Programs as they should. The affiliate programs themselves, then do not feel that they can do anything about it and do nothing to improve upon it from the banner side of things (like tracking referral urls)

NOW – what we need is some honest answers from the top affiliates who have pushed this concept (better stats, better tracking) to certain affiliate programs and what their response is.”

In 1997 – I saw the first Gambling offshoots from the Adult Industry.

The Adult Industry has been heralded as innovators. Some things – not so good. But Mainstream – took notice.

But the Gambling Industry – seems to be in it’s infancy………..still.

    What the hell is wrong?

What model are you following? Are you following a “screw you” platform.

The Adult Industry did that back in ’97 – and it didn’t wash.

My next article on my weblog will be titled:

Gambling Websites Perpetrating Fraud On Their Affiliates

    With a beginning paragraph of:

While Internet Gambling Operations may or may not be perpetrating a fraud on their customers, they are likely perpetrating lack of information to the many thousand of men and women around the world who promote their websites by not providing referral tracking statistics.

Do I give a shite. No. And I’ll tell you why in another future post.

All of you that would like to contribute to this article – please PM me.

I intent therefore to Press Release in full mode – with all the costs necessary.

You can track referral information by using a unique profile for each page that you promote a link on with almost any Playtech program. It’s a standard part of their software, and when I want to look at my tracking more closely, that’s what I use. I like the Playtech tracking.

I would certainly, along with nearly everyone else, need more information on that to know what you are talking about. What is Playtech tracking? If Playtech tracking is so good, then why do Playtechs that I have NEVER promoted show clicks? Why do Playtechs that I stopped promoting a year ago show clicks (like Golden Palace)? I get 5 clicks a day (looks like they are using a random number generator that will show anywhere from 1-5 clicks) from nearly all Playtechs that I do not promote.

Anyway… That’s my short diatribe on Playtechs because I believe their stats less than any other casino software.

With that said, though…. Please fill me in on how I could track them. I do promote 1 Playtech casino and would love to know how to get this referral information.

Just go into Banner Settings and create a unique profile for each page you want to track referrals from. Then use that URL in only one place, and when you run your reports, you can run them by profile.

The URL will wind up looking something like this:

    xhttp://banner.examplecasinohere.com/cgi-bin/banner.cgi?id=N&member=yourmemberid&profile=uniqueprofilehere

Might vary from program to program.

Ah. Ok, you mean ad id’s like there are in many of the other programs as well. Yes, this is true. That can be done.

I do that with BrightShare, WagerShare, and many others.

I still would like them to automatically show the referral URL like Tim says he will work on. I think you will be surprised where some of the clicks are coming from. Maybe I am wrong, though.

Income Access also has the same feature of tracking by individual profile, as well as the player id.

I like the Playtech tracking. This is a nice feature, but it requires you to create a profile for each and every page (or site) that you want to track. I have thousands of pages online now, and I want to know exactly where each click originates. Using profiles isn’t something I can easily use to do this.

For me, profiles would be useful to track how a particular landing page performs. But it would be virtually impossible for me to use profiles to track thousands of different referral pages. I could create groups of pages, I suppose, but that still doesn’t give me as much detail as I’d like.

What Playtech and Income Access offer is nice, and a large group of affiliates might find it useful up to a point. But if you have a network of database-driven websites, you won’t find it that useful for tracking every single page.

A few weeks ago I designed my own way to track the outbound clicks, and it seems to be working nicely. kwblue, you are right — it is surprising to see where some of the clicks come from. The information is fascinating and priceless.

Profiles are useful, and I do think Randy’s suggestion will help a lot of affiliates. However, I would like to see more affiliate programs collecting and displaying the referral URLs. As I said, this information is priceless. :)

Perhaps you forgot to take down a link somewhere? Possibly it’s a robot hitting an old redirect URL you once had indexed? Or maybe it is just a bunch of random numbers placed there to make you think you should continue promoting the program. :burnafatt
