InactiveI say good luck to the young people – they’ll have a bright future ahead of them in the online affiliate industry if they’re starting this young.

InactiveI would refund the money.
I do not think underage people need to be in this industry.
They can get their feet wet in any number of other affiliate schemes and be ready to roll when the time comes.

InactiveI would probably sell it to him, I started making money gambling online the day I turned 18 I just turned 20 this January, by the time I graduated from high school I had made close to 80k. I get discriminated every time I walk into a car dealship or where most people my age do not belong looking at brand new corvettes and porches but I make four times what that stupid car salesman does. Anyways enough of the rant, but if he is smart enough to run a portal like that give him a chance at the very least, I know thats all I had was just one person give me a chance and I walk all over the people that never gave me a second look. It could be of great benefit to you down the road as well.

InactiveWhat Jason said! I had to fake my age to promote some affiliate programs a few years ago (cj.com comes to mind). If I’m old enough to drive a car I’m sure I can host website. sneaky.gif

InactiveAll they are hopefully doing is promoting sites and not gambling themselfs so I really don’t see them braking the law. I could be wrong but I don’t see any harm in it.

InactiveI am just worried about the law.
It may be all grey area otherwise, but it is very clear about underage and gambling.
I have absolutely no doubt that young people can do anything us old folks can – I was on my own two feet running a business when I was 16 myself. Being 16 and female – lol – people laughed at me until they saw the results. Discrimination was thriving back then, being young was bad but being female was impossible then. The only way people could imagine a young girl making money was by selling her body.
If he is partnering with an adult, you could deal with the adult and avoid possible legal problems.

vladcizsolMemberI don’t think Gambling online or offline is suitable for persons who are underage. It’s the law and in this case it’s one I agree with.

InactiveI would avoid working with under-aged gambling affiliates (if I somehow knew their age). With all of the legal gray area we are working in, it would be a shame to get in legal trouble for this. Heck, being the paranoid type, I would be worried that this is some sort of sting operation. How exactly did you find out this person was 16?

InactiveI would let them go with it.

At that point things strayed from what I’d been told originally. I asked for a ‘please explain’, out of that the age was divulged.
And where does this sit with me?
imo, on a moral/ethical stand point it’s wrong.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, laws state (fact) that a 16 year old can’t gamble at Vegas for instance. As this kid is in the USA then the law of majority has to prevail.
Besides, I don’t know of any other Country where a 16 year old can gamble legally. Which also includes owning a gambling establishment, which by proxy that’s exactly what he’s doing.Given the current climate of our industry & using the H.R.4777 for example, a gung ho poly would have a field day with this sort of knowledge. I’m going to refund the money and pull the ad b/cause in my mind it’s just not right.
Thanks everyone for expressing your thoughts

InactiveYes, I have to agree letting a 16 year old run a gambling portal might really rub some people the wrong way so I have changed my mind about letting him run with it, the kid could probably find a different thing to market that would be more acceptable for his age. A quick question are you implying I should not be an affiliate because I am only 20, and I can’t legally gamble in Vegas? I guess I don’t know how many 20 year old webmasters there are but I am wondering if everyone is frowning on me for this?

That being said there is a WORLD of difference between a 20 year old and a 16 year old.

InactiveThese chaps are not gambling they are in the same business that we all are. How is it that someone 18+ 21+ or what ever age has more freedom of speech than a 16yr old?
Afraid of the law? Well I am sorry, but if its illegal its not going to matter if youre 16 or 50, they will get you. That said I wouldnt have a problem with a 16yr old in our marketing / advertising business.

vladcizsolMemberQuote:How is it that someone 18+ 21+ or what ever age has more freedom of speech than a 16yr old?I suppose under that argument that an 8 year old is afforded the same right to freedom of speech and should become a gambling affiliate, eh?
At some point common sense has to step in. A 16 year does not belong in this business. It’s not about freedom of speach its about responsibility and common sense and being able to clearly define what is an activity appropriate for adults and what is appropriate for minors.
Lets not get so silly in the pursuit of defending civil liberties that we lose all credibility and come off as nutters. If we start advocating children participating in the promotion of gambling the general public would DEMAND that the government take serious actions against our industry and they would have the moral high ground to take that position. Lets not allienate millions of parents, please, we already have enough trouble with the far right wing wanting to legislate us into non existance.

InactiveI guess its all a matter or personal opinions, but when I was growing up, there were laws that dictated the minimum age of employment, as I recall it I was unable to work until I turned 16. Today I actually think the age is lower than that, but it sure is not as low as eight.
I used the civil liberties example because some would like to think that is a defense for advertising online gambling. For me it’s about maturity, if the 16yr old is of legal age to work and has the gumption and smarts to pursue a job in internet marketing, more power to them.
Much difference in 16 and 20? Depends on the individuals. I know many intelligent 16yr olds that I would pit against any of the high school dropouts that currently work in our industry.
