no meta tags?

1. Meta tags dont mean that much to google. To the other SE it does have more weight. You can add them but i would’nt speed so much time on them. Speed most of your time on content and links.

I figure put them in there, do like 2 hours tops research to find the keywords right for you with the best ratios. What can it hurt? Maybe revisit the meta tags in a few months and see if they still fit the theme.

The most important thing is how others link to you (with what anchor text).

(Bloggers were about testing the anchor text importance in Google, so they linked on their page to this url with the above mentioned anchortext. The page itself doesn’t even contain this keyword (none of them) and it is in the first place on Google.)

Meta keywords and description could be good to show the SEs what are your pages about. WHen you do a Google search with “site:www.mydomain.com” and all of the pages use the same keyword and description then there will be only one unique listing. If you differ your meta data then Google will see your pages individuals. So it can help, but not so important than it was years ago. ” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

That seems to be right. the more research I do the closer I get to thinking that the anchor txt is one of the most important things. Am gonna research this more and see what I can find.

As others have said, anchor text is the most important thing. Meta data is not used much by Google, but it does help to differentiate your pages if you varry it from page to page. Yahoo and MSN use the Meta description as the description in their SERPs, so you should definitely have well written and accurate descriptions for them. Try to put your keywords in once, but only once as it can’t hurt. Don’t stuff your Meta keywords tag as that will only get you in trouble. Some of the smaller SEs still look for that Meta tag, so it’s good to have it there for them.

I always pay attention to my description META tags for each page – I’ve seen every SE (including Google) use this for many of my KW rankings.

They become a problem when you have them but don’t use them correctly and your site has 10,000 + dynamically created pages like mine. I had meta tags and good ones. The problem, they were all the same for all the pages. The title and content were different, not the meta tags though. What did I find? That no matter how unique the title or content was if the meta data was a match to previously listed page, then all new pages would show as sup. results, which sucks. So now I make sure to at least include what is different in the title in the keyword and desc. meta tag. Good pages will not list because this stupid little fact. It may be better just to use no meta at all in my case. You can see an example of this now by doing site:http://www.freepokerleague.com on google, you will notice only two links listed when I have over a thousand indexed, they all had exact matching meta tags. I fixed this so this example may not last long. I have no other known bans or filters so this was my conclusion to why I haven’t listed well with all the other pages in my site.

It looks like you have 963 pages indexed now. We recently did the same thing. Our site is about 2600 pages of dynamic content. We had very few pages indexed (sans the supplemental results) prior and over 1100 indexed afterwards. After the last Google update however, we only show 521 indexed. Not exactly sure why that happened, maybe Google only shows a slice of the pages like they do for links. Haven’t really tested that out though. Also, I haven’t figured out how to use Google Sitemaps with dynamic pages yet.
