InactiveAntoine … I share your views 100% and hate the phone myself.
There is nothing to talk about since this is a simple business model.
We send customers.
You send cash.
You stop sending cash, we stop sending customers.
The rest is details that can be communicated via internet.
End of discussion.
Get togethers like the one FocalClick just organized are
a different matter and in my opinion are worthwhile if not
just for the pleasure.

InactiveI have to admit I am guilty of asking to talk on the phone to affiliates. Sometimes I feel it’s easier to convey a message than to type everything out in an email.
I’ll make sure not to be pushy about it in the future. Sorry if I freaked any one out.

InactiveI am for phoning and against.
Should there be a problem with an affiliates account then phoning is better and sometimes more responsive than email.
Also should an affiliate perform well then a call is justified as the porgram would like to express their thanks and see ways they can work more closely (one phone call can save several emails bouncing back and forth).

InactiveLOL Antoine… I don’t blame you one bit

I have learned that I have to accept some calls on my cell coming from “unknown” and “withheld”, but as a general rule I will not answer unless I can identify the caller.
I will especially not answer when a call comes in at the wrong time of day UNLESS I can identify the caller. And then they better have a damn good excuse.
In the four years I have been doing this, I have not had to take many calls, fortunately… I generally insist on email so that I have a copy of what was discussed. Outside of that, about 95% of calls MUST be scheduled with me if they want me to take the call. And I don’t ever publish my home phone number, besides which if they call they will always get a busy signal

I can be a people person but not to the extent of making myself available to take calls at all hours. For the most part I’m happy to do my negotiations by email… and anyone who doesn’t answer my email immediately just gets shuffled down the priority list

Operators, if you MUST call, at least have the courtesy of arranging a time in advance. This is an international business – not all of us keep the same hours.

InactiveI’m not a fan of phones either. Throughout my endeavors in this business I find it set back when the other member insist on phoning when everything can be conveyed via emails. In the past I ran into parties who want to be “off the record” and that usually portrays a bad sign. Legitimate operators shouldn’t have a problem laying everything in writing in a business deal. Same way with affiliate dealings.

InactiveI didn’t mean to be insulting to anyone specific when I made my statement. And yes everyone in this business is in different time zones and has different business hours. I’ve learned to unplug the phone before going to sleep. I realized I should do this when my gf snapped at a casino at 5am one day (she’s cranky when she gets woken up in the morning)
I see no problem with phoning if the call is scheduled and the affiliate and manager have a solid relationship.
What is probably most frustrating is when casinos call to recruit affiliates. Casinos aren’t the only ones responsible. Ah-ha, epilot & kanoodle are three that come to mind. The absolute worst casino was MVP.

InactiveWell guys,
I hate the cold calls I get so much, I hand out a business card that has my dial up number listed. Of course it is busy almost all the time.
I do, however, give my private number happily to any managers who email me for it and let me know when they plan to call. Also, I insist that my number not be put into any database whatsoever.
Some things are better to discuss on the phone, but I often will send off a confirming email to have a record. Sometimes it is nice to chat a bit on the phone to keep up relationships, especially with people one has met before or does a lot of business with.
Everyone feels differently about the phone. I am ok with it, but don’t like unannounced calls.
I often use messengers, you can multi task while on the messenger. A phone call takes all your attention, so is more of an imposition on your time.

GuestHi,
here’s the thing everybody missed (unless I missed ; since I merely glanced at the posts)
but am I the only one that has trouble understanding someone with a different accent?
Shoot, I remember a couple of times I just finally told the aff manager (after asking them to repeat what they said about a 100 times) to please just write me an email. I can read; I’m not a linguist.
Then I recall the time I was to get a call from a manager from England. I thought finally, someone I could talk with and understand them.
WRONG! English there; and English here; are almost two different languages. At least for me.
so aside from everything else; its more likely that I will understand what you’re saying to me thru email; than on the phone.
*except you girls. I just love an accent (most of them) on the ladies; but don’t expect me to understand; just that you will have my full attention – lol

Inactiveedited oops…dean forgetting ellen had logged in…
ACCENTS! LOL!
I have learned to talk a bit slower as us Aussies tend to run words together, but the worst experience was with an Indian rep who was calling several times a week. I swear I understood maybe 1 word in 10 and still cannot figure out why he kept calling.
He eventually gave up.
Even here currently in Florida I have a hard time at the supermarket checkout getting understood.

InactiveEvery blocked call I get is just a bill collector…

I am so unloved… 🙁

InactiveI have no problem with aff managers wanting to phone every once in a while so long as they make an appointment and keep it…
Unfortunately, I have had 3 in the last 2 weeks who are determined to nag me via email for a “chat” and never end up calling at the pre-determined time. This is rude in my books, and I hope that aff managers checking this forum realize that if you feel the need to talk via telephone, then please have the courtesy to make an appointment and keep it.
Finally, no offense to aff managers, but if you plan on calling, please be aware of potential language barriers…. this can be a problem.

vladcizsolMemberI have no problem talking to affiliate managers on the phone. I can be tough to get ahold of, but once you catch me I am more then willing to chat.
My pet peave lately is Mortgage Companies. Anyone who has more then one property knows what this entails as I get called at least 6 times a day, every day by Mortgage companies who want to refinance me. It’s maddening as these guys manage to get around my call screening and privacy director and love to call when I am busy or eating.

InactiveProf,
I hear ya! I’ve got a couple of big ticket properties (bad investment idea) for sale up here in the Great White North and even though the web listing specifies “no realtors or brokers” I still get a lot of calls. Whats up with people?

InactiveI’m honestly not a people person. I find that sending a 30 second email gets accross as much information as half an hour on the phone.
Antoine – You seem to be a pretty personable person to me…
Maybe I’m just easy to get along with

InactiveThese guys don’t need to communicate with you over the phone.
They do it is because they believe that emails are ignored.
In a lot of companies you can get into trouble for not appearing to be busy.
A 30 minute phone call where you are frequently mentioning ‘buzz words’ can sound very impressive to the people around you.
Also they may have a senior member of staff sitting next to them asking how many phone numbers they got today and how many calls they made.
Personaly I like to communicate with affiliates over the phone but I won’t force myself onto an affiliate who doesn’t want to work this way. I completely understand and respect this.
Now if you’ll excuse me i’ve got 30 affiliates left to call before the end of the day:p
