Just a comment–perhaps unrelated, perhaps not. I’ve read that we should focus on designing our websites for the visitor, not for the search engine.

I’m trying to move in that direction. Not sure how successful I’ve been, or how far in that direction I’ve gone, but I sure think that it’s a noble goal.

Yeah – I think that’s the whole point, Randy, to design websites with the visitors in mind.

I think I am going to phase out linksmanager on my geek page – it’s the only one with it – and that’s going to be an enormous undertaking.

I figure a few links to appropriate websites on the page which carries suitable content is maybe the way I’ll go. For example, links to good bingo sites on the bingo page, links to good texas holdem sites on the holdem pages, etc. – Rather than having separate pages just for links.

Do you guys think that is a good idea?

That is precisely what I am fixing to do.

I will put up to ten targeted related links to content sites on each of my pages.

I want to look at quality mostly.

I’ll be in touch with you guys. I don’t use linksmanager.

Ok, we have the 10 link maximum – but what about all those darn affiliate links?

Targeting link pages by some idea, most obviously by topic like bingo, is good for you (assuming the links again aren’t to penalized or sites Google/Yahoo thinks are horrible), and also somewhat good for the linked to sites. This goes back to what I said about related sites. All the sites on one of your link pages are considered related or similar by Google, so any bingo site should see a small benefit from being listed literally next to other good bingo sites.

Also, if you link to ten bingo sites that Google thinks are in fact good quality bingo sites, it says to itself “hmm, good judgement of quality; perhaps this site is of quality too.” In other words, don’t get the wrong message here. Linking out to quality sites (again, what Google thinks are quality) is good for your rankings (though not for PR). The problems are in bogus links in and out, stuff virtually *only* done to boost rankings. Even though linking to a quality site might have part of its aim to boost your rankings, it still is also objectively useful to a human visitor. Those 10,000 page link partner sections are useful to no human.

One other thing: “I’ve read that we should focus on designing our websites for the visitor, not for the search engine.” This is a good idea in general, but one thing you need to definitely assume is that sometimes these exactly coincide, like titleling a page about blackjack odds “Blackjack Odds”. And then there are a couple things much more useful to search engines that you should use, like a site map. Even though a sitemap may be more for the bots than humans, there is certainly no harm to humans in having one.

Hi all, I find this thread very useful and interesting. I went ahead and followed Classic’s suggestion about viewing my related to: links and found a bunch of traffic sites and ‘making money’ sites! I don’t- nor have I ever linked to crap like that and I certainly don’t use links manager or anything close to it. I’m quite confused  I’ve really never tried to get higher PR and have always gone by visitor results (in other words, if I’m getting a lot of hits and making money,) rather than all this stuff about seo and pr. Anyway, since I’m new HERE, I realize there’s a lot for me to learn and a lot to do to improve, but I have no clue as to why google thinks that similiar sites to me are traffic ones?

I had posted this on a few other forums, but since my main site is gambling, and I would like to see some real “cleansing” in the industry:
Many of you might have seen thousands of websites getting penalties over the past couple of weeks. Obviously, another algo tweak is at work, this time targeting the famouse link exchange.

I have been buying links for a while – as an advertisement and to improve search results (busted), and I would like to warn all the webmasters who sell links, and everybody else for that matter.

Selling links to bad websites will get you out of the search results, and by “bad” I dont mean gambling, or adult, but those who have penalties by Google. And if you are out of the SERPs – next month you will not have single customer or advertiser.

Here is how you could find if a website has a penalty:

    1. Simply type the whole URL (http://www.casinoaffiliateprograms.com) into Google. If:
a). “Sorry, no information is available for the URL” is displayed – the website is banned.
b.) Just the URL is displayed, with no description and no cache (links, similar, and contain the term are still showing) – the website is banned.

Linking to that website, through a link exchange or selling ad space to it, will get you banned, 100%.

Also, If the above prooves to be O.K., you should still check to see if a penalty will be impossed on that website in the near future.
This is how you do this:
    1. Type just the domain name in Google (casinoaffiliateprograms.com), and if just the URL is displayed, with no description and no cache (links, similar, and contain the term are still showing) – the websites is about to be banned.

Also, for those who plan on buying ad space – do the same research about the website selling you the space. If the website is banned, you will not get banned if you just buy ad space (providing you don’t link back), but Google will not count those links and you will just throw your money away.

And the most important thing – do not get confused by the PR, a website might have PR8 and still be banned – it just has not been reflected on the toolbar.

I think it was about time for Google to cean itself up a little, and on the other side – the rediculos prices for ad space (gouged by the “PR re-selling) will finally go down, and we could get some traffic on more normal prices.

Anyhow, all this has been verified and I have tons of URLs to prove it. Just take my advice and do your research.

As of Google penaltising websites which buy links – that is not true. What happened was the chain reaction I was waiting for a long time ago – one big gambling website was penaltized and every other website linking to them for a while got penaltized to, and so on, and so on.

I dont know if anybody is paying attention to the number of returned results, but for “online casinos” it’s bringing back 2,700,000 when a month ago it was way over 3,500,000. When you add up the new pages with “online casinos” content this means that Google penaltized well over 2,000,000 pages thanks to the Chain Reaction.

You know you wont see any external links on my homepage :)

I have a 0 ranked page but the site is only about 4 weeks old on the net, or 5..:)

My thinking is like this, why don´t we, the CAP members linkexchange with eachother. I notice that you all seems to be very honest and i belive i am too.
If we work together we´re unbeatable.

You might have talked about this before. But it´s a very interesting idea.

Says WAZ – who have a 0 ranked site, but would never think of cheat people with linkexchange or whatever for higher ranking :)

He-he. You could easily check this by:

    1. check to see if an inner page has PR>0.
    2. run a “contain the term” search for the URL.

Either way, if your website has been online for a week and you have done your job getting some links to it – the home page will be indexed by that time :)

Oh why is my site still 0?
It is indexed but still 0.

    :(

    I have no idea.

I wasnt talking about PR but if a website is banned or not.

If you have good links – it should get some PR at the end of this month.

I surmise this is not correct based on observations I have made. I do, however, believe that, if you happen to link to a number of sites with some sort of “penalty”, it will eventually hurt your site. I believe Google looks at the overall quality of links to/from the site in question.

Is it worth taking a chance loosing your website even if it’s 50-50 chance?

I think we’re placing too much importance with PR rank. Functionally, it is little more than a status symbol, unless you’re selling links based on having a strong PR..

My PR went down with the last update, yet my traffic from the search engines increased – and continues to increas. That’s the bottom line.
