I only gave phpBB as an example. Some call it a Content Management System, other think it isn’t (it’s not just a community, of course it’s a way of managing content). Well, it’s not important anyway.
What I said was connected with what Striker suggested: some open source CMS, as you can see and test here: opensourcecms.com
    Drupal, Joomla, etc, etc.

Sure, if the hacker doesn’t know the code, it will have more trouble with it. What I said was that if you contract a coder, to do a “quick” job, you never know if he was careful to make something secure. In the past I’ve contracted some to make some custom scripts, but today I really don’t know if I should use them.
I have a custom made blog system, but I prefer to use WordPress.
I have a custom made directory system, but I prefer to use phpLD.

I really prefer to use open source systems. They will be more easily targeted, but also fixed in the blink of an eye…

Well, it’s just a matter of taste, isn’t it? If we all liked the same…

Its true, this is kind of a theoretical argument, and it boils down to our individual requirements. Everything in life has two sides to it, and its all about managing the risks regardless of what side we choose. As long as we keep our open source stuff updated we should be ok. I once had a PHPNuke site defaced becasue it was several versions old and had a well know security issue.

We should all be backing up our sites and databases on a regular basis anyway, regardless of what systems we run.

I totally agree. And if you update your system immediatly when a security fix is released, chances of beeing hacked are much lower. Oh, and phpNuke is considered a very buggy program. Really need to be careful with that one!

    regarding PL :)

    8. If I gave you a million dollars today, what would you do with it?

I’d call PokerListings and tell them that someone delivered their check
    to the wrong address….

Thanks for the info in this thread. I went to opensourcecms and checked out some of the programs. I liked this one. – http://www.opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=488&Itemid=159

It requires a few addons that only cost a few dollars. Great resource. :woo-hoo:

I’m glad you liked it. That way you can test all system before really installing them on your server. It’s really useful!
