GuestHi, please view a conversation with Spear:
Steve says:
Hi Spear,
Steve says:
quite a mess I’ve started huh?
Ted says:
hey steve
Ted says:
lol
Ted says:
no mess
Ted says:
the aff managers better own up
Steve says:
can you make heads or tails of it all? I’m very confused and most of all .. wondering if its a cause to be concerned about in respect to tracking
Steve says:
have you seen the % stuff that comes up that I was talking about?
Ted says:
gimme a sec while I look
Ted says:
well, i didn’t see that % stuff
Ted says:
and a clickthrough looked perfectly normal
Steve says:
if you visit http://www.gamblingwhales.com/approved_casinos.htm and mouse over the link gambling club you should see it
Ted says:
i did
Steve says:
and didn’t see the % stuff?
Ted says:
no
Steve says:
hmmm
Steve says:
perhaps a browser matter? I’m using the newer version of IE … I think
Ted says:
without showing me what it really was, I would have to assume that it translated to a special character – for example space would be %20
Steve says:
should that make a difference in tracking?
Ted says:
depends on how their system works
Ted says:
but usually, no
Steve says:
ok, thanks. this is all so far over my head I’m almost sorry I started it. specially if its not going to show up in some people’s browsers.
Ted says:
it’s probably || that caused %xx%xx
Ted says:
i’m using IE, what are you using?
Steve says:
same. the newest version I think
Ted says:
lol i’m on 6 at home
Ted says:
7 on the notebook at the office
Steve says:
what you on now?
Ted says:
6
Steve says:
could explain the difference
Ted says:
can you mouseover and tell me what the % stuff says?
Steve says:
yes, just a sec
Steve says:
this is what comes up extra
Steve says:
%7C%7C
Ted says:
yup
Ted says:
almost surely the ||
Ted says:
if you do a search for %7C in google, what comes up?
Steve says:
have to check, just a sec
Ted says:
lol that didn’t work
Steve says:
Did you mean: %7C7CU-BOATS Type U-Flak, 7U-BOATS Type U-Flak, 7A, 7B, 7C, 7C/41, 7C/42, 7D, 7F. STRATEGY LIGHTS SERIES p r e s e n t BattleFleet Naval Strategy Games with Battleships Dynamics Game …

Steve says:
those were the first 2 results + the “did you mean”
Ted says:
Vertical Bar/Pipe (“|”)
Ted says:

Steve says:
you mind if I put this conversation on the CAP ?
Ted says:

Ted says:
sure go aheadTed says:
read the page though so you get a better understanding
Steve says:
will do.January 10, 2007 at 7:12 pm #721921Anonymous
Guestso it could be that the new browser version shows the % stuff and older doesn’t.
not sure if any of this matters or not; just trying to figure out why the signups aren’t showing.
January 10, 2007 at 7:15 pm #721924Anonymous
InactiveEDIT: just saw Ted said all this already, I didnt scroll down far enough in the IM

It’s because of the special characters in the link – the vertical bars | and the underscores _
These are not valid characters in HTML. They must be encoded, and the encoded version starts with a %.
You can see the table of encodings here:
http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_urlencode.aspSo a | appears to be %a6
It shouldn’t make any difference – the link is followable and its meaning is understood by the server. In fact, when I followed one of the links you pasted earlier, it redirected me to a different URL; but with your aff tracking ID still included.
However I agree that you should keep the links as simple as possible – why use the long link with the |s and the _s when you can just use the short ?affid=blah link.

InactiveFor sure not a browser related issue. The bottom line the link is invalid it seems. I could do ping traceback test but would take a while to set up.
BTW: not a valid http protocal could also be coming from your end.

was redirected to
http://www.jackpotcity.com/index.asp?VT=285525780&b=custom&s=JPCerror2007BTW asc characters / | ____ % ^ I understand them very well. I failed to realize others may not sorry. These are considered in most cases to be invalid character sets. They are mainly used for the dark side of things. BB1 from my limited view jackpotcity.com will not track downloads.
Time for a nap this is not good. Just to reconfirm the link http://www.jackpotcity.com/rfb_sa94_…f27237__b=sa94 is invalid.

InactiveHi Guys,
Couldn’t help but notice the URL Encoding questions here.
a Pipe char (|) = %7C when url encoded. See for yourself:

Cheers,

InactiveThank you Ryan I certainly appreciate it. This is a very serious issue for all us webmasters. If I had a name I would call it cookie theft. Could perhaps go into greater detail but I don’t really feel there is a need to.
The bottom line to make life easy if your outbound links when hovered over have % of any range, not good. As in post #19 the link
http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/ht…rlencoding.htm
says these are “Unsafe characters” whether it be URL double spacing | @ # etc…
I am very surprised BBI has been dooked in this fashion. Someone has a lot of answering to do. NOT GOOD!!!!

GuestHi all,
Greek I’m not so sure it was any kind of intentional “dook” … and may not matter in the scheme of tracking but in the process of trying to find out why the signups at RB didn’t show, I discovered this interesting situation which could perhaps explain the missing signups.
I can’t and don’t condemn RB at this point but rather am just trying to find out possible tracking issues and this seemed to be a possibility.
I’m forced to wait on a reply from Shane/Wayne to find out why the sign ups didn’t show. It is unlikely this link code thing should be problem according to Spear who knows quite a bit about this sort of stuff however.
In any case, RB has been underperforming (for me) for quite a while now and as such I’ve decided to just cut back on their exposure while I go thru and change the links over to the more simple version.

InactivePerhaps a mistake I would consider that. The fact is the URL is not traceable back to your site. I know asc11 like I know the sun will rise tommorow. I lived and breathed these characters for 28 years.
But perhaps this could be a honest mistake. Please keep us informed if possible.
This will record the click but highly doubt downloads will be recorded.
Thanks BB1

InactiveThis is very alarming going now to check all our links as we are under performing there as well.:dozing:

InactiveI trust Ryan’s insight no guestion. It is very rare I disclose all, I remain modest. In regards to spearmaster I trust his judgement as well.
BTW: spearmaster and you will know what I am saying “on route” from a previous post.
Thanks fellas

InactiveHi All,
Although it’s been a long time, the pipe(line) character was used to redirect the output of one command to the input of another command
way, way, way back, before windows, before the internet, back in the DOS days we use to use the pipe symbol to display a long file directory a page at a time. (the output of dir command is piped into the input of the more command)
C:>dir | more
(before Microsoft added the /w /p switches to the MSDOS dir command)
What browser version used to cut and paste the banner/text link code may matter.
consider the two banner code snippets from BrightShare.
The first is taken using NS 7.1 – notice the double & (in 4 places)
The second example is taken using IE 6.xNews in the iGaming and Sports Betting affiliate world moves fast.
