InactiveI hated it and now I am happy with it. Just takes some getting used to and it really is very stable and works well.

YoungT.jrMemberI was a touch concerned when I bought my laptop and Vista was installed, but now that I have used it for several months I actually prefer it to XP. I find many of the new features a pleasure, especially the way I can view my desktop with one click as opposed to XP’s right click task bar…. select show desktop.
There really has been no downside to Vista for me. I have a friend who works for MS and was told that the OS is so much better than XP. Just like shaking hands with your left hand, it feels funny at first but you get used to it.

InactiveI found it a matter of turning some of the nuances off like toning down the Windows Defender and having the firewall not alert you for everything. If you do that it works just like XP. Especially, if you use the XP theme.

vladcizsolMemberIts ackward and ours restart ALOT more then Windows XP Pro.
XP was FAR more stable. Hopefully over time it will mature into a better product then it is now.

InactiveThat is very weird and you must have some problem there.
Mine has not restarted even once, and xp used to periodically.
I am with John and Chips, fine tune it a bit so the nonsense notifications go away and use the new features and you’ll get to love it.
My only complaint is that it still has compatibility issues with some other things, but I am sure they will go away.
Boy, I remember the days when the thing used to crash all the time, before XP. There is just no comparison.

ClubContMemberI tried it and didn’t like it at all. Slowed down everything and eats up too much ram.
A lot of my tech friends that have to deal with Vista shake their head as soon as you say the word. XP I have found to be far more stable but the updates and fixes for it are done so it’s an OS that is supposed to disappear over time. I think Vista has far too much work to do to becoming stable and a lot of MS money will be spent on that. I see Apple taking a larger share of the market and they are close to 10% right now and I believe Vista is the reason for it. I am very close to an all Apple setup.

Inactiveif i had a choice i would downgrade from Vista to XP, but my laptop provider doesn’t offer drivers for XP.
imho, vista is a piece of crap. its such bad software that not even two years into its sales, MS has given up hope on it by pushing its Windows 7 platform already.
some of the reasons behind my dislike:
– vista consumes computer resources like there is no tomorrow. while my current laptop is twice, if not three times, as powerful as my last laptop which ran on XP, the current laptop is actually slower in its startup and operations.
– windows updates crash my computer. every time my computer gets updated through windows update feature, something breaks down. mostly its the video card driver that needs to be reinstalled. things like this never happened in XP.
– some software wouldn’t work on vista. this is mostly resolved now.
– the user access control feature on vista should be turned off. whoever came up with that feature didn’t think the functionality through, making it was of time and resources.
thus, in conclusion i can say that windows vista is NOT nice. i’ll take XP anytime!

InactiveI’ve had vista for almost a year now, hated it for the first couple months. Now I have it to where I like it. Turn off some of the Vista protection as it’s an annoying overkill. Had to turn something off to get StatsRemote to work. Had to upgrade some of the software that wouldn’t work with it, my scanner still won’t work with it. But other than my scanner, everything works fine with it now.
Once you get it running the way you want it and get used to it, things will be a lot better.November 5, 2008 at 11:53 pm #785619Anonymous
InactiveYeah, you have to turn the user control off to get statsremote to run, but you don’t need the user control anyway. I agree, user control is a nuisance.
And yes, some things don’t work well with it intitially but can be made to.
And yes, the scanner won’t work unless you access it from paint or some photo program first.
I have never had a problem with windows updates or eaten resources. I have had a Vista laptop for over a year now and have a Vista desktop too now and work on it all the time.
I did hate the laptop when I first got it. With a passion. I am quite happy with it now. It was just a matter of getting it to work the way I like. Now I want a smaller laptop for travel and have been peeking at an apple, but that’s a whole other story.

Just got a new laptop yesterday and all of the PC’s here only have Vista. I am finding this a disaster and I had heard there were problems with it but as i did more research on the WEB I find I am not alone?
Can those who have used it share your experiances with me?
Thanks,
BrianMicrosoft and their software get a bad rap – but much of it is from “evangelical” techy nerds who are MAC / UNIX / LINIX preachers and they were never going to say anything positive about MS anyway.
:roflmao:The latest iteration of Microsoft’s operating system comes in so many flavours (from basic right through to business, enterprise and Ultimate) that you’ve got to be careful not to generalise … so my experiences are from Microsoft Vista Business.
I bought a Dell about a year ago, and although I was very wary about being an early adopter I did get an early VISTA business operating system, making sure to buy all pieces from Dell to get an “insurance” about compatiability. (Basically if they sold me everything then it’s their problem right?)
So I had no problems with compatiability, because I bought a complete new system, with routers and printer, and all new components are generally VISTA compatiable. But I do know that thanks to much stricter secutiry rules a lot of old hardware that “broke the rules” in order to get better performance in old windows OS’s had problems working with VISTA.
In setting up the new system to work with the wireless network I found it frustrating, and not obvious, but eventually after a couple of hours I got it to work by tweaking an obscure setting deep in the bowels of the OS. It was not “plug n play”.
And I did take on using the VISTA machine myself (as a wee bit of a techie) rather than pass it onto my casino gal, as I didn’t think it was fair to use her as a guinea pig to find out all the hassles. (Originally I had planned to give her this machine as it was a grunty graphics beast).
Initially, the applications were a bit “buggy” but I’ve been running it for a year now, and further experience has shown that around 90% of my issues were with the bundled McAfee virus and firewall software … rather than true applications.
I had 2GB of RAM, and A twin core 2.12 GHz CPUs, so the system also had more than enough power to handle the demands of VISTA, which I had read could be a problem.
Microsoft have consistantly released service packs to fix and major issues (and a lot of minor ones) and with service pack 1 installed (about 4 months ago) it’s a lot more reliable now – and I would say better than any previous windows platform including XP.
If / when I purchase a new PC in the next six months then I would not hesitate to by a Windows Vista Business operating system.
I would not purchase the VISTA OS and try to retrofit an old PC.
Hope that helps mate.

InactiveI dont currently use Vista on any of my machines, but my sister bought a HP laptop with Vista installed and I have to say, I like some of the functions (like being able to type in a name in the start menu to find a program etc) but have noticed that it decides for some things to work only some of the time..
Eg. Her built in webcam – I just cant get it to work on her laptop, however my bestie has the exact same laptop and we can get it to work on hers just fine. I tried reinstalling the drivers on my sisters laptop but nothing.. And I’m putting it down to vista.
A couple of our guys in the office changed to Vista and because of the type of setup we use in the office, one day they got in and every single person using vista just couldn’t log into their computers. Had to get the IT guys to fix them all up…I think it comes down to the rule of never buy the first release. It’s kinda like buying a new car.. They release the first make of the new model, and then the next make of that model that comes out has a whole heap of stuff improved, fixed and even more extras.. I think at that point you get upset at yourself for not waiting.. I know I would (kinda why I decided to buy the last make of the old model of my car instead of the first make of the new model)…
It was the same when Windows went from the old DOS to the new UI. The first release was a disaster! The next releases got progressively “better”..

InactiveI had XP and when my computer was stolen I was thinking maybe I should go with MAC, but then part of me though Microsoft has been doing this for a while now so the new operating system must be good, what a ridiculous absurd notion that was.
It’s a piece of garbage just like everything else Microsoft releases.

GuestLike some of the others that have commented here, my first experience with Vista was when I got my new laptop just before CAP Euro. It took some getting used to but I really find it’s faster and smoother and it hasn’t crashed even once! I’ve been back from Barcelona a month now and still haven’t gone back to my desktop computer that has XP, more RAM, more memory and a bigger screen. It’ll make a good door stop. LOL

InactiveI like Vista. I have and do own quite a few versions, including Home Premium x64 and Utlimate x64 and I am very pleased. In whole honesty, I am yet to restart a computer due to OS problem!
P.S. I have an unopened box with WIndows XP sitting in the closet for over an year now. I’ve got is as a back-up if Vista turns out sh*tty, but I am yet to use it. Will keep and sell on eBay in 40-50 years
