InactiveI think it’s really important to point out that Carruthers has not been arrested. He was detained, which is a rather big distinction.
It’s easy to jump to the conclusion that this was politically motivated, however, this has not been made known to be fact. This may very well have been a random situation, having nothing to do with online gaming.
Regardless, Carruthers is one of the brightest minds of this industry and it’s a no-brainer that he will use this situation to call further mainstream media attention to what is happening in the US.

InactiveJust in from eGaming Review:
News Alert: Carruthers ‘due in court this afternoon
Chief executive of BetonSports David Carruthers will be appearing in court at the Federal Court House in Fort Worth, Texas, at 2pm US Central time according to a spokesperson at the FBI.
Carruthers was detained late on Sunday afternoon at Dallas airport by the US authorities while en route from the UK to Costa Rica.
He was detained by members of the FBI and the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) at around 4pm local time with a warrant for his arrest. He is believed to have spent a night in Tarrant county jail.
According to sources, Carruthers will be charged under the federal racketeering statutes or RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act).
The Federal warrant has been issued out of state with a sealed indictment. The hearing will determine his rights and the possible bail conditions. Sources indicate he is unlikely to be granted bail. The hearing will also determine which Federal Correctional Institute he will be sent to.
His wife Carol Carruthers was travelling with him but was released immediately. He would have spent a night in the local county jail.

You’re right, we don’t know, but sad to say, it’s not that far of a leap to make these assumptions regarding the actions of the DOJ. I truly hope we’re wrong.
I’m glad to know David is a person that would consider ways to make this situation work for the industry but the DOJ uses a huge money stick and he does have a responsibility to his shareholders, which the DOJ would know and take advantage of (as evidenced by the down turn of stock prices of BetonSports and PartyGaming after this news broke)
We should know soon enough I guess. By the way, I saw his wife was allowed to leave, but I’m assuming he’s still being detained. Has anyone heard otherwise?

InactiveTo be honest, I can’t believe that these sports betting people have the balls to set foot in the USA. They obviously know that any place which accepts telephone bets for sports wagering is in violation of US law and the DOJ has a conviction (Jay Cohen) to prove it. Why any of them would come into the states is beyond me. I will not promote sports betting sites for this very reason. While I do not think they will go after affiliates, I am not willing to chance it over a few bucks.

InactiveDiceman wrote:How many others do you guys think will come to vegas now?Well the Bodog conference is next week. I think the Carruthers arrest might make Ayre at least give his appearance a second thought. Nah his ego is too big for that, he will show up and be canned (without bail) as was Carruthers.

InactiveNo need to argue about it now, but being “detained” by the governement is an arrest, you are in custody, against your will.
Now we see why, a RICO indictment.
If they allow him out on bail, i’d be surprised.

InactiveAccording to the report I seen; bail was denied. So he will be kept against his will a bit longer.

InactiveThis is very alarming news indeed, and certainily made me do more research to see what is the full story and here is what I found:-
BETonSPORTS CEO Detention unrelated to online gambling ban
Breaking news of BETonSPORTS plc CEO David Carruthers’s detention in Miami travelled lighting fast this morning, shocking the entire gaming industry and negatively affecting gaming stocks on the UK Stock Exchange. TheOnlinewire.com Costa Rica and U.S. sources report that Carruthers’ detention is unlikely related to the online gambling ban (HR 4411) approved by the House last week but is more likely related to the federal investigation on BETonSPORTS’s former owner Gary Kaplan.
It was known within the industry that Gary Kaplan was under federal investigation for his actions while at the helm of BETonSPORTS before the company went public in 2004. Sources report that federal authorities want to clearly identify possible criminal activities directly related to credit business ran by BETonSPORTS at the time Kaplan was at the helm of the company.
According to the same sources Carruthers’ detention is related to the mentioned federal investigation. Investigators believe Carruthers might be in possess of information that could lead to Kaplan’s indictment.
Gary Kaplan is rumored to be the real main man behind Igotsportsbook.com, a sportsbook established last year after Kaplan sold his remaining shares in BETonSPORTS.
Other U.S. sources report that Carruthers’ detention may also be related to the violation of the Wire Act. While placing bets on the internet is still in a legal limbo and its not to be considered illegal yet, placing and accepting bets via phone is. In this respect the move to detain Carruthers could be seen as the strongest statement ever made against the gaming industry by the DoJ. The vast majority of sportsbooks accept wagers over the phone, hence violating an existing law, the Wire Act of 1961.
Whichever reason led federal authorities to detain Carruthers, the entire gaming industry is shocked by the news. The first outcome of this situation will likely be that other high profile sportsbooks owners and CEOs will adopt a much lower profile and eventually avoid travelling to the United States or transit on U.S. soil in the near future.
The situation also raises question marks on the opportunity to maintain scheduled events like the Bodog Marketing Conference. Developments on Mr. Carruthers detention are expected to become available to the public later today or in the early hours of tomorrow.

InactiveIt’s all about money, it’s what makes America the most hated nation in the world, they never do the right thing unless they stand to benefit financially, and this is just another avenue to exploit, and another group of people they can bully around.
They are the modern day pirates of this world, i guess it’s not enough that a large majority of Americans hate America and are fleeing for their lives, but now they got goons waiting at the airport to grab you, how pathetic can someone be, really.
You will never see me there, ever, for 2 reasons, number 1, i am barred from there as some of you might know, but if i give them some cash then everything will be cool, i used to play pro ball there and it’s a long story…number 2, that place is a total disaster and i have no interest in ever going there again, it’s eerily creepy, like a time bomb that’s ready to go off
These guys should have known, i personally never fly on any American owned airline company, and never ever stop over in the USA under any circumstances
USA = Not OK
I would imagine that according to US law, those comments make me a terrorist…they are so out to lunch it’s not at all funny
Obviously people should know that i meet a lot of Americans wherever i go and have a lot of buddies down there, as people are people no matter what country they live in, some people you like and some you don’t, that’s the way it is, but it’s always funny to find out how many people in the US share my thoughts, i don’t understand why they put up with it, just grab a gun and whack those peanutheads like everyone else in the world does, what is so damn hard about that
*Legal Disclaimer*
I only support the use of violence if it will benefit mankind and make the world a better place

InactiveAnd just so everyone knows where i’m coming from
I am not wrapping a towel around my head and riding through the desert on a camel, my family has roots in America going back 100 years and helped build the foundation of that country, and the Americans saved my grandfather’s life during the World War…but they turned on us, like they turned on their own, they are not the same people anymore, like it or not, it’s sad, very sad
This stuff they’re doing now is not cool, just spiralling down into oblivion, it just keeps getting worse

InactiveTalking about Pirates, please also note the correlation between the decline in the number of pirates and global warming:
