I have started to notice a ton of backlinks coming from xxxupdowner.com and I see alot of other members here sites also getting posted up at updowner. The pages look real spammy.

I am wondering if these backlinks are positive, nuetral or hurting?

Getting unwanted links removed is a tricking question and I’m in no way a SEO Expert, but I do know there are ways.

What I know about SEO is very general. This particular site looks like a sats site similar to Alexa but I think it isn’t after looking at some stuff on it.

Yes, lots of links from them here (1000s). One would hope Google would have the nous to realise that these sort of sites are beyond the control of the webmaster, and as such discount them.

Its of my opinion this particular situation has really affected one of my sites to the point every url is banned from google. The same time these links appeared is the same time we lost all ranking for at least 10-15 solid keywords on first page of G.

They do not seem to hurt sites for Bing or Yahoo…

I have filed 8 reconsideration requests, and submitted several forums and have begged google to stop evaluating our link profile on these links.

I have 3 super affiliates who have told me once these links are removed – the site will reappear as it was before these links happened (they had same situation happen).

Problem is google will not reply and its been a while since i submitted another request.

These types of links can easily tip the scales and teeter tooter your site to the dark side.

Do whatever you can to get them removed – they destroy!

I don’t have that many links to my sites as I’m quite new to this but have a fair few from UpDowner.com – would those links removed benefit my site?

I just found this in the FAQs section:

How can I block my site from showing on Updowner? You have few methods to block your site from Updowner listing:

    • Register your site with us.
If you have registered your site, you can block it in your admin panel (this is the quickest method). In a “Description” section there is an information about the site status, you can block or unblock your site there. Your site can be also blocked by Updowner admin, but if you feel that your site was blocked unfairly, please conntact us.

    • A robots.txt file.
A robots.txt file restricts access to your site by robots that crawl the web. These bots are automated, and before they access pages of a site, they check to see if a robots.txt file exists, and if it prevents them from accessing certain pages. You need a robots.txt file only if your site includes content that you don’t want to indexed by bots. If you want to let bots index everything in your site, you don’t need a robots.txt file (not even an empty one).
Updownerbot won’t crawl pages blocked by robots.txt. In order to use a robots.txt file, you’ll need to have access to the root of your domain (if you’re not sure, check with your web hoster).

If you want to block Updownerbot from indexing your site type in your robots.txt:
    User-agent: Updownerbot
    Disallow: /

    • Meta tags.
The noindex meta standard is described at The Web Robots Pages. This method is useful if you don’t have root access to your server, as it allows you to control access to your site on a page-by-page basis.

To prevent all robots from indexing your site, place the following meta tag into the section of your index page:

To prevent only Updownerbot from indexing:

    Any good?

I would not register at this site, however I would block the bot. You don’t have to register to block it.

this site is known to be spamming links .. it is on Google’s radar as there are numerous threads with the site on Google’ Webmaster Help Forum … I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but if you can get them not to link to you that is the best option

@slotsaff, DO NOT use this or you’ll block all bots including Google.

I am going to block them via robots.txt file as a test. I will let you know the results once the links are removed. I do know since seeing them 95% of all our traffic has been gone so its worth a try. Will post results if i see any.

    Note: i just found this..

    http://google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=updowner.com

Apparently they have malaware and trojans and all kinds of goodies. SOme say this site is not affecting rankings but it certainly does no good.

I have blocked them now – see what happens.
