Usually to the left or right side of the content and “above the fold” (visible prior to scrolling) is most effective.

I’d remove all the small banners at the top and place one large leaderboard banner there that rotates. I wrote a blog post on this recently if you want to catch up :)

I know that it’s more conventionally to place one large leaderboard banner that rotates.

However, I looking for new ideas. I still think the small banners at the top are ok.

Each one has a text link beneath which also enhance usability. What do you think?

isn’t the no.7 rule the most effective? across the top, and down the left side? I always thought that was the prime real-estate

I don’t think that left side is a good choise. Right and top only. I’m for text information.

My info was based on something I read regarding scientific studies (cameras tracking eyeballs of surfers) of where people look when they hit a new page.

    Check it out for yourself.
Where do you look when going to a new page ?
    – Usually Left and Top.
    – Then check centre and right.

If you’re selling something – then that’s the order that you place banners.

My opinion is to put a large banner in the middle of site. scrolled by description words. please see my site Index Online Casino as a sample. I personally tell you all that larger banners make good convertion against smaller banners. Hope this helps.
