I did read something about a recent windows update actually changing the way ActiveX works – needing people to “click to activate” ?

This was done to stop TRojan loaders or some such – which seems to be the last scumware/spyware method.

So I accepted the change when I updated.
Lemme check you sites to see.

Yep – just as you described.
Doesn’t worry me too much – simply a double-click to use.

Thank you very much for checking that out…

It DOES bother me… I worked hard to get a nice amount of professional looking flash on my sites and now this crap makes it more trouble for the end user? Load of crap if you ask me…

Is there no way to stop this? No way to fix the problem? 😡

Probably the easiest option is not to use flash.

I think that it will be a user choice as to whether the new “default” settings are changed.

Now – I thought I was well protected – but I actually picked up one of these trojans the other day and it was a particularly nasty bugger to get rid off.
    :nervous:

It needed repeated runs of AVG, Spybot and Ewido to keep it in check as it had a new way of respawning … but eventually I got it. After about 4 hours.

I will not be changing the new settings … and you’d have to assume the majority of MS-EXplorer / Win XP users will be the same.

Well, I guess it’s time to remove all flash navigation from all my sites…

Windows is so so so damn stupid… No one can solve a way to prevent trojans from ruining a good thing? Unbelieveable… Stupid… Mind blowing…

    Well… back to the ol’ 2001 navigation…

I haven’t had the update yet (I don’t use autoupdate), but a few minutes ago I received a few link exchange requests via the script I use. They were all from the same guy. When I clicked on one of the sites to check it out, my anti-virus went crazy with about 8 trojan warnings. I use AVG 7.1 Pro, and it instantly alerted me.

Now that I know what’s going on, I’m going to update right away.

Needless to say, this guy won’t be getting any link exchanges.

    Integrity –

You didn’t mention which browser you were using, but I use Firefox and I had this happening to me at one time. Turned out it was an extension I had installed that blocked flash and to see it all you had to do was double click on it to see it.

If you are using Firefox, you might want to check your installed extensions for Flashblock or similar extension.

I also use IE and have all the latest updates and am not experiencing this problem at all. If you are using IE and have installed some sort of toolbar this could be the culprit.

Hey TheGooner you wouldn’t happen to have a copy of the trojan would. If not what extension was it using. I would love too take a look, keeps me sharp.

These changes IE is making were announced quite sometime ago. The activex controls can be very nasty at times for attracting viruses ect… I always surf by disabling and open things up into new window. Plus having some antihacking program, run this in stealth mode is a good idea, a couple of shredders, and as many spyware programs you can get.

Most viruses have to be deleted manually. AVG may delete, but the virus changes itself in a instant and remains in your system. greek39

    Sorry Greek.

I hit the boards and found out the right way to get rid of it including loading a specific regedit and rebooting in safe mode to stop it starting up so I could delete all files.

I then flushed the quarantine file and specifically wrote over the disk space where it had been … (literally digitally stomped on it).
    :wink-wink

IF I remember correctly it was a mix of SpyAxe(?) and SpyEngineer(?) which was using Vcodec as a trojan loader.

These things specifically go after your anti-virus software and then try to get you to buy a specific anti-virus program that they’ve “written” to clean it …
    :wow:

A quick google for Vcodec and spyaxe should point you at the correct message boards – but I think that I’ve given you the gist of the information there.

This is the result of Microsoft losing a patent case, and having to change the way IE handles embedded objects.

Now, if that isn’t the most ridiculous thing. What, Microsoft can’t come off some of that huge stash of cash to pay for the rights for this thing? Typical Microsoft crap in my opinion.

    Here’s a write-up on what’s up, and a way around it.
