I only wish we have that problem to worry about.

Guys Alcohol Prohibition lasted 13 years in the United States before it was repealed and FAR more Americans enjoy a casual drink then do gamble.

Marijuana laws are still being agressively prosecuted after more then 40 years of protests and numerous studies advocating decriminalization, so we have NO rational reason to believe that the new laws will EVER be repealed.

If anything I fully expect rightwing nuts like Kyl and Bachus and Frist to add ADDITIONAL laws on the books which further tighten prohibition. They have said they intend to do so and does anyone really believe they wont be successful if they stay in office?

This pipe dream that the laws are going to be repealed and the casinos are going to keep our players are the least of our legitimate worries.

I think things are a little more hopeful than that.

Alcohol prohibition occurred in the 20s, a time and culture which is a million miles away from today. There was no internet, no mass media, little international travel and no ‘global village’. Whilst it’s true that right-wing autocrats have infiltrated American politics and are succeeding in pushing their puritan illiberal agenda, you are no longer in a vacuum. At the same time that the US is limiting your freedoms, most other countries in the world are expanding theirs – and this will not go unnoticed. The ban on internet gambling is going to look sillier and sillier when compared to the policies of the UK, Europe, Canada, and most of the rest of the world, where internet gambling is being increasingly legalised and legitimatised. How is the US going to continue to justify its stance when it is obvious that these other countries are suffering no great ill effects with their liberal laws, and in fact are financially flourishing? Quite apart from civil liberties (which clearly play little part in the US political landscape), there’s the potential revenue to think about.

The major US gambling firms are going to want to expand into online ventures. Harrah’s et al may benefit in the short term from a lack of online gambling, but long term they want that extra revenue for themselves. So whereas they might have lobbied for it to be banned now, soon enough they will reverse their position and in turn get the ban reversed.

The US is currently on a dangerous course, one that is increasingly turning the country into an insular, parochial state at odds with most of the rest of the civilised world. The present US administration would like the wolrd to believe that the US is the bastion of civilisation, qualified to dictate the world’s affairs according to their own agenda. But their piety is at odds with their actions, and there are an increasing number of albatrosses strung around your necks. Iraq is of course the biggest, but now Frist has seen fit to add another, and it will not go unnoticed.

I believe it it is only a matter of time before the masses wake up to what is happening under their noses, and I think things will change sooner rather than later.

Frist quit the Senate to run in 2008. This is going to come back to haunt him.

Thanks, I’d forgotten that race was to fill his seat.

If that conman, Frist even looks like he’d be elected, I’d have to sacrifice myself to history, and take up a new “sideline”.

Oh, yeah, he’s well qualified for the position. First, the SEC allegations of insider trading last year, and now this:

Why did he bow out 2 years before his Presidential bid ???? Because a loss of his seat in a 2006 election would have been a devastating blow to his Presidential bid.
