InactiveI wonder how good the chances of passage would be if this takes the same route as UIGEA? As a rider on another more important bill that everyone votes for?
I don’t think a repeal has to be viewed as being pro-gambling. There are so many other ways to spin it. Unenforceable law, too big a burden on the banking industry, cleaning up unethical practices of the Republican congress that just got ousted, prohibition creates dangerous situations for addicts, whereas regulation provides a safety net. You could go on and on. So many ways to make this look good, even to right wingers. ;]
It would have it’s best shot if it could be attached as a rider, not to mention poetic justice.

Do you think that Bush would sign any legislation that further defaces his Republican brethren ? I don’t think so. Guys, the damage has been done, and the only way this thing gets repealed, is if there is a plan in place to tax this industry. As stupid as the Republicans have looked in this administration, there is no way that they would want to look even more stupid, by repealing a Rebpublican-created law that just got passes (regardless of the method by which it got passed). We (myself included) all missed the boat for protesting and lobbying. Most thought this would never happen. Guess what, it did. Face the music. The industry has taken a major hit, and it is doubtful that it will ever fully recover. We had our chances, and just sat on our hands counting our chips. This is nice news to hear, but in my eyes, it is inconseqeuntial at this point. The best that can happen, IMO, is that we somehow get our NETeller funds back.

nick777Member“Tis true about the almighty Bush. That being said the following things are also true:
1) The United States economy is in a downward spiral. Its been all over the news that subprime mortages (including GMAC) are having trouble due to foreclosures on Americans that (a) are losing there jobs; and (b) are getting flooded with foreclosures. This has caused the Construction Industry nationwide to drop like a rock. No loans; no construction. Just check the stock market – from Asia to Europe, all are getting skiddish about the U.S. Stock Market due to its drop in stocks because of what is happening specifically in mortgages and a wimpy 1% retail sales increase.
2) One of the infamous 11 states that prevents online gambling is Michigan. An article yesterday forecasts Michigan’s unemployment rate for 2007 to be 7.4% and for 2008 to be 7.8%. Also, yesterday, Manpower, the nation’s largest temporary worker service, announced they had a TOTAL of eleven (count ’em, – 11) jobs available in the largest county in Michigan. My guess is at this point, many U.S. Governors would welcome a new revenue stream – now – today; not tomorrow.
3) I believe Barney Frank is a realist. The bill should never have been secretly passed with no debate to begin with and hopefully they could yank it for that reason alone. If I see whats going on in the economy, he certainly is no idiot and does as well. The nation’s Governors are screaming for revenue (most of which is going for the war in Iraq).
Will something be done? We shall see. However, all the chess pieces are in place for one hell of a “checkmate.”

InactiveI consider any news that doesn’t make the current situation worst as good news. Time will tell if this dim light will glow brighter and make things better. At least it’s refreshing to read some positive news finally… It’s better than nothing.
US members.. I think it’s time to rewrite to your politicians/congressmen/senators etc on a weekly basis about this and put all the pressure you can on them non stop.
I hope to hear more good news soon

Bush doesn’t have a line item veto. If a repeal can be attached as a rider to an important piece of legislation, he’ll sign it.
We all didn’t sit on our hands. I emailed and faxed Bill Frist who was my Senator, and gave money to campaigns to try to oust the movers and shakers behind UIGEA, through ActBlue. The twoplustwo legislation forum was my first stop every morning for months leading up to passage. There is a mod there and another poster who actually work on capitol hill and kept us all up to date on daily happenings.
UIGEA didn’t happen in a day. Goodlatte, Kyl and Leach have been working to push anti online gambling laws through for years. It was just the perfect storm in ’06 with Bill Frist running the Senate and other factors.
Most folks agree that UIGEA will go the way of liquor prohibition. Prohibition fails and is replaced by regulation. Step one = someone has to sponsor a bill to repeal. If you’d told me we’d already be on step one a mere 6 months or so after the UIGEA was passed, I woulda laughed.
This is great news. Getting Neteller funds unlocked is a side show compared to this. As far as that goes, the more important event for neteller funds is what happens on the 16th of March. If charges are dropped against the two Neteller founders, then :woohoo:
Guys, the damage has been done, and the only way this thing gets repealed, is if there is a plan in place to tax this industry.
Absolutely correct. Tax the industry = regulation. I’d lay any kind of money that along with a repeal bill you’ll see a “regulation study” bill.
Barney Frank isn’t the second coming, but if he goes through with this bill, maybe one day we’ll be able to look back at the neteller fiasco as the high water mark of our troubles and the Barney Frank bill as the point our problems began to recede.
Who knows… time will tell.

InactiveHi guys, just wanted to let you know Frank was shortly interviewed today, and also thought it was necessary to provide some background about him as a politician because I think most of you will love him, so I hope you don’t mind me posting the article we just wrote featuring that info….

InactiveAttach it to one of his war bills. He’ll sign anything that has our billions being flushed down the toilet in Iraq.
