InactiveI used to get these a lot – but I think that I shut down the email address that used to get them.
Although I like to exchange links – I almost never even check out these “cold approaches” that are obviously formula.
I agree with you – that if you’re actually looking for traffic then having a link buried deep is useless …

Guestthanks for your reply G.
actually I was wondering if they’re even good for SERPS?
Hard for me to believe that one link of what seemingly looks like 1000s, is going to make that much difference.
Of course, I don’t know shoot from shinola when it comes to those things … but it sure seems to me you’d need to be listed on 1000s of sites like that to even make a dent because if I were google (or another SE) I’d be taking into consideration that its an obvious attempt to boost SERPS and therefore not give much if any credit for such links.
Now that said; it seems to be the norm in many cases.
Seems to me to be a forumula that has a lot of inherent flaws for finding a most relevant webpage.

InactiveI’m exactly the same as Paul. I delete them when i get them and prefer to seek out links from sites where I know the owner or initiate myself.
A “manual” link exchange request where they have obviously taken the time to look at my site shows more care and attention which indicates to me their site content is likely to be of a higher quality and better maintained.

Agreed. Thats what I do and believe.

InactiveI do the same, doing things manually is the best way. I receive many offers per day I just delete them.

InactiveI go the manual route as well. Did try a couple psuedo-automatic link exchanges, and they really don’t work out. I check backlinks on a regular basis to make sure others haven’t taken them down or gotten themselves banned. Most link exchanges stay up thankfully, maybe 2% go bad for one reason or another.
As for your question on if links help in the SERPs, they most certainly do. The trick however is finding the most valuable links as one very strong link can do as much as 100 very weak links, but those 100 weak links do count as well.

InactiveOh, forgot to add…I really enjoy (sarcasm) the daily emails offering a very profitable deal called 3 way link exchange. Those I delete without even looking. We also pulled down our link submission form due to the amount of abuse that was receiving.

gamesdexMemberTbh I occasionaly send out these sort of emails to sites. I dont see it as spamming and whilst generally the response rate is low its not not significantly lower than much more personalised emails which take a lot of time to write and are probably not worth it.
However, I also personally contact more relevant sites to negotiate custom exchanges.
Get yourself some proper code that checks for reciprocal links. My coder knocked up something in a very short space of time and it makes monitoring a breeze.

InactiveYou can also use this site if you don’t have a developer to write code for you. You will have to keep track of where all your reciprocal links are located.

InactiveReciprocal links from content pages is my future on this.
I think it is a good bet for PR and traffic. One Way? Very near the scam with companies looking for PR and ranking for their clients.
Links Directory pages? Falling in the supplementary index in all industries and based on my research maybe for ever.

gamesdexMemberI agree with you about link directory pages, but I don’t think one way links can every be penalised.
