    Congratulations!!!! :clapper:

You need to keep looking til you find the right webdesigner to work with – I too had a deadbeat when I started. They can really hold you back – and there are a lot of them out there, so it’s not worth sticking it out. I’ve had the same one for 3 years now and am sure glad I dumped the first one.

The problem is, he’s a friend of mine, and did all the work for free building the site, as he wanted to have it for his portfolio. I’ve promised him 25% of the net profits from the site for as long as he continues to maintain it. Don’t know if this is fair (is it, do you think?), but he seemed happy with it. Anyway, right now he’s heartbroken over his girlfriend and I can’t seem to motivate him. That’s why I kind of decided to build my next site myself, hence the questions about CMS software etc in the other forums.

I’m such a newb at this stuff… so much to learn.

Damien, Donna is my tech. Slava did the templates, and my webmaster does the rest of the layout etc. I also have 4 part time writers now.

I will be giving Gamesandcasino a whole new look sometime next year – all 1000+ pages worth! nut.gif

Sisko, giving out 25% of all profits is huge. Apparently that still doesn’t motivate him. If he is a friend you should be able to explain to him that this is a real business, and it’s not possible to leave it sit for days or even weeks. Especially not at the biggest growth stage.

People never seem to take affiliate business seriously – they treat it like a hobby you can put on the shelf whenever you please.

If you want to make it in this business, you need to work at it just as if you had a brick and mortar business. Likely more.

Maybe you need to find someone new to build a new site, and your friend can continue to play with the old one for 25% of what that makes.

You can have one built that you can update yourself – still have that professional look but be able to manage and add content.

I agree with Dominique 25% is quite a bit. To build websites I was using dreamweaver, photoshop, notepad html and the list goes on. I got a little sick of programming. I found a program that can bulid a state of the art website and offer unsurpassed server provider, plus a whole lot of other things. A monkey could use this program, drop and drag. Its really really good! I have been holding off in releasing this info to a later date when I was ready.

The program is free but when your site is done there is a 30 something set up fee and a 9.95/month server charge and a free domain name to boot. This program enables your to build a site very, very quickly. There is tons more it offers. If interested pm me I will give you the details to sisko for now.

Congrats on your first sign-up!!! greek39

    Webdesigner or Web Developer?

One designs a webpage layout. The other codes it and codes the backend :P

The current deal you have worked out with him is an iffy one. It’s hard to say “work for something that you can’t see within reach just yet!” And have them continually motivated.

Have weekly coffee outings to discuss the website – that motivates me and a few other affiliates I know. (Hey, you can write them off as a business expense. The outings being business meetings and all!)

Define “state of the art”. If it codes in W3c valid html and css, sign me up lol

If it codes in tables or flash, then toss it out.

Yes it codes w3c, html, css, flash, javascript, active scripting, manipulates linux to unix binary 301 holes manipulations, complete list of tracking pane values such as pt.x=mcRef.x. Now define state of the art, In the context of this thread I was referring to a user friendly program that is very good and can bulid a nice looking website simply and easily without no programming knowledge. It is a html grabber system drop and drag run on a linux server, which has been breached once back in the late 70’s.

I wouldn’t dismiss flash, or java either very unscrapable but not bot friendly currently, tables are fine. I hate talking programing lingo. greek39

    hehe.

    Sounds like a great program!

I’m generally anti-flash because it isn’t very search engine friendly, requires a plugin for people to use, tends to take a lot of time to load, etc. Used as a header, it’s perfectly fine, just not when it’s used as, say, a menu.

Tables are just hard for SEO, takes a while to load, and is considered improper. I’m a programmer, so I’m a zealot when it comes to these things, lol

Its always nice to have a programmer on board, I’ve been one since the late 70’s. Googlebot finds my tables fine, no problems? Just have to design the right table. greek39

Okay, I guess he’s sort of both, but more of a web developer. He wrote all the code for the database and all the pages, and I told him what i wanted to layout to look like, roughly, and he put it together, then I said “now change this…” and he did it. That sort of thing. Anyway, he lives in Edmonton and I live in Calgary, so coffee is not an option. What you’re saying about the ‘wrok for something you can’t see yet…’ is exactly the reason I offered him a share of the profits, as he had originally offered to do it for free, just wanted to use it for his portfolio. Anyway, I’m optimistic that he’ll be more motivated in January. If he’s not, maybe I’ll offer him some money for time already invested and then offer to pay him an hourly rate going forward, then I would be able to ‘expect’ things of him, instead of relying on hope and his personal motivation. :)

Coffee should be an option, just meet in Red Deer. From here it’s only 75 minutes to calgary and 90 minutes from edmonton.

There are no issues with using tables and SEO. Page load is insignificantly slower if tables are used, so insignificant that the average 56k dial-up user wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. In fact, just about every site on the web uses tables for structuring their layout. How exactly do you design a site if there are no tables?

Maybe you are referring to the use of frames. Those are definitely bad for SEO and can hurt usability in general.

Design without tables is how I do the majority of my sites. Are they more SEO friendly…. That’s debateable. Many say yes, but search engines certainly can read tables just fine.

As far as ‘How exactly do you design a site without tables?’

Basically, you use DIV tags and a lot of ID’s / Classes with CSS. All the formatting of the site is in the CSS. This not only allows your page to be ‘clean’, but allows you to quickly change the layout / look / color scheme of your site.

Hope that helps.. It’s getting late and my mind is a bit fried. :)
