I think it depends on the look and feel of the site.
They work for me and I always look for them when holidays roll around. They may not work on other sites.
Christmas and Chinese New Year work for me – times for giving and receiving.
Other themes like Thanksgiving, Easter, and even standard New Year less so. The focus is on other things for people and seems much less successful as a tie-in on my sites !
