I haven’t looked at all of the press releases.. But I’ve written press releases, reviews, etc. for Darko. By the way, If I wrote even one original sentance then you’ve stolen my words, in which i wrote for Darko, and sold him copyright for. In fact, in his receipt, it states that he bought content and copyright.

An average customer of mine spends about $1500 in one month buying content from SYN, so you’re borrowing it, isn’t a little waste of their time, you’re really costing them accountable money.

It pisses me off to see that your blog isn’t going to change.. In fact it has me considering another press release for Darko, however this one free.. with a few quotes out of this thread it in.

Let’s be clear the copyright does not protect quite as much as most people think it does – and you can use ANY information as a SOURCE.

Layouts, themes, news items etc, are pretty much written 100 times over with only scant changes …

We all see multiple examples of “almost the same item” in all news sources …
    – Think of TV News channels – using the same sources.
    – Think of newpapers printing the same Weather forecast, TV listings page.

    ===================================

    As an example …

I’m writing a match preview for Liverpool v Arsenal tonight.

I’ll get team news from one source, manager quotes from another, stats from a 3rd source and add in my own editorial.

now as much as 75% of that content has been sourced from other sites, but I will combine it and present it in a unique (and hopefully) original way.

But factual sections of it will have been simply cut n pasted.

    ===================================

I’m not endorsing wholesale or complete reproduction of an item (be it press release, review, article or a news item) but blogs / myspace / delicious / and a 100 other “social network” websites are notorious for doing just that.

    Anyone heard of You-tube ?
    Sold for 1.4 billion dollars.
95% of that is rip-off content

Using other peoples copy, content, words, whatever you want to call it, as source is legal, but questionably so, and the law there is that it cannot be (I don’t speak legal, and I’m not going to spend an hour looking up the quote) harmful, or take away from the original source, and the original source must be credited, which in this case, I don’t believe it was.

But what that breaks down to is it is generally ok to use a snippet of an article, and quote it as a source… so long as you give credit to the original author.

A snippet, not a press release in its entirety, with the benefits changed from them you to you. The idea behind a press release isn’t really even for it to be reposted, that’s kind of an online thing, in the offline world press releases are sent out to relay facts, so that articles can be written.

However, K-Mart would not be able to use the work of Wal-Mart’s marketing team, and use their entire press release, just changing the name of the store, nor would they remain reputable if they did.

In any case, back to that original law, if the original author, or owner of the content states that they have been stolen from, obviously they believe that their content has been diluted, and you can be held liable for that theft.

Simplest solution… take down the offending stolen content, most people are happy with that… if that solution is not enough, and a company that claims to be ‘serious’ and ‘professional’ boasting about their several staff members, can not agree to remove the content from a blog, and hire someone to write their own copy, there are other a few other remedies…

    1. You report the stolen text to google (getting rid of any possibility of adsense accounts on the domains that steal content)

    2. You report the domains that are using your content in effort to get them banned from the search engines.

    3. Report them to their host, point them to both copies of the content, and attach proof of ownership.

    4. Legal Recourse can be taken, monetary damages can be sought after, this is pretty rare though, because it’s very involved, especially if both parties aren’t even in the same country. This is the reason most people use the Google DMCA road.

Reporting content copiers to Google and hosts is the best recourse, as if you can get them delisted, etc. it will destroy their site and any earnings it generates. A threat to do this may be enough.

My post was not directly aimed at you, more content copiers in general, although, yes, that would be you (albeit indirectly through a writer) in this case.

To be honest though, I think your partner’s attitude earlier in this post was pretty poor suggesting that changing a couple of lines of someone elses article/press release and then crediting it as your own would be fine and you would not be stopping this practice anytime soon. However, legal or illegal it may be I think its totally wrong.

If you copied something I had written changing only a couple words here and there and then had credited it as your own I would not hesitate to report you to the appropriate sources.

It’s always strange how it’s always a content writer who is no longer worked with who’s responsible; isn’t it?!?

so it would be ok to change a word or 2 ?

so you wouldnt mind me now outsourcing a job to one of my many content writers to go to your site and i will tell them to copy and paste every single article and review you have and i will tell them please skim through and change 2 words per article.

i think they could do 100 articles for me in 1 hour (just changing 2 words)…..hmmmm cheap content for sure….maybe $15

So in your words “it would be ok”

No it would not be ok to change a word or two, read gooners rewrite on the poker gazette press release and you will see what he has done.

Gooners writes about Chris “jesus” Ferguson invitational to Harrah’s Horseshoe Casino, and facts about prize pool, players and winnings

    – we are talking about press releases here, not articles, and why on earth would you want to start the new year by copying ixgames.com articles and reviews ????

We are looking at the press releases for the moment, and gonna decide what would be the best to do in this case. Be sure we are going to solve this issue.

Oh yes, I have been doing it for years.

Quality control becomes one of the major components of such an undertaking.

You better budget serious time for that!

    Stealing content is not acceptable.

There are plenty of writers online working for very little money and writing completely original, quality content.

Hire some decent folks, treat them well, and you’ll have a decent site.

Every piece of text or indeed full article, should be linked to the source and clearly commented upon.
