I periodically see threads with someone offering to “manually” submit your website to thousands of directories. I know little about SEO or such services, but I expect that many on this site are experts in these areas. Is this type of service useful? If so, who would you recommend?

My limited understanding of SEO techniques make my following answer questionable but i believe submission services to be a waste of money.
Once you’ve submitted to the major search engines once then when they index you the little ones will pick you up themselves.
Directories though would be nothing more that backlinks. i think.
