There are 3 different names for this type of strategy:

    Bum Marketing
    Piggybacking
    Parasite Hosting

They all mean the same thing. Create a well optimized article and put it on an authority website. Putting in on your own website won’t get you high rankings because its damn near impossible to outrank some of these high budget and very old, authority websites. This strategy works very well and I use it all the time. Your articles wont maintain their high SERP’s though for more than a few days to a week unless you have a solid link building campaign going to that article on the authority site. Or you can choose some less competitive search terms and they might stay there longer. Depends on the niche and doing the proper research.

LOL I just checked the article your talking about. It looks like they registered a bunch of accounts through some proxies and started spamming comments on their own article. 68 days old and digg hasnt banned it yet. Hah. I should throw up a white… umm… grey hat article and see if I can outrank him.

This stategy has been around for awhile and for most it will return little results – check out the backlinks for the sites that rank well – if you can turn on 10,000+ links to any domain with a bit of age I suspect the results would be better.

FYI – I did a test with an authority site article then did likewise for one of my 2 year old domains – all things being equal, the authority site outranked my own domain for a couple of weeks, then my domain started outranking it. Then the authority article sunk down the serps.

Don’t put too much value in this technique. It gets indexed fast and may provide some higher than expected initial results, but it’s certainly not a “magic bullet”.
