I received and email from a company asking me a few questions to my account payment information.

Basically I had my Acct # in the account field, but I had my US Bank routing number in the “sort code” field. Are these the same? Also I was asked what’s my Swift Code.

Anyways, I replied back and said my routing number is the “sort code.”

LOL… I’m confused.. Can anyone here explain this.

The SWIFT address is an 8 or 11 alphanumeric characters long international standard uniquely identifying your financial institution. The SWIFT address is also known as BIC (=Bank Identifier Code).

You best call your bank and have them tell you what it is for you.

I don’t know if it’s true in the USA, but in the UK, your SWIFT code is printed on your bank statements. You might want to look there.

Routing number and sort code are equivalent.

Many, probably most, US banks do not have SWIFT codes. Instead, if a SWIFT code is required, you’ll need to send the funds through a corresponding bank. Your bank should be able to tell you who they deal with for that purpose.

The wire instructions would look something like this:

    BigBankName, SWIFT Code BIGBANK
With credit to YourBankName, Acct # YourBanksAcctNumber
With further credit to YourName, Acct # YourAcctNum
