    xxxhttp://www.fair-online-gambling.com/casino/fog-2008-online-gambling-ban-likely-for-germany-12-29-07.html

To enforce the ban, the German government will put rules in place that will allow it to order local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block German access to online gambling and related websites

I thought the EU said already NO to that?

Do you have a German Casino website? Mind posting the link to it, if so?

Anyways, this was crap news about Allemagne a couple days ago but it will force the EU to step in rather sooner than later. As long as no Germs get banned from financial service providers or sued for gambling online, everything seems to be fine still.
Let us just hope for a good 08…./

Here is the orginal Bloomberg article.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&sid=aDaDw6KOECpo&refer=germany

German legislators plan on blocking sites at ISP level and cutting off banking. Sounds like Deja Vu to me.

    Hello everybody!
I just became a member yesterday,
    and I am in Germany.
What I know for sure is that Hessen,
    where I live at,
    is free to gamble online.
We do however have some States in Germany
where Online-Gambling has always been forbidden.
I really cannot believe that they will ban
Online-Gambling in the few allowed States over here.
    But,never know.
I guess we wait and see.
    Greetings,Connie

Sorry, but what hippo666 is saying is incorrect.
Online Gambling has always been considered illegal in Germany.
The state of Hessen is no exception.
What hippo is propably referring to is that the state of Hessen used to have the only legal online casino in Germany (Spielbank Wiesbaden). This casino is/was the only legal casino because it was licenced by the state and you could only play there if you reside in that state. I said was, because their website now says that the casino has been closed effective Dec 31st 07.
The new legislation prohibits any form of online gambling. That’s what’s new. That’s why even the only “legal” online casino in Hessen had to close shop. They are also putting the many online lottery sites (such as Tipp24.de) out of business.

There is one exemption however, that is bWin. They bought a gambling license from the former eastern german government DDR and the courts have confirmed that this old license is still valid and they can offer online gambling under this license but only in the states of former east germany.

    Quite confusing situation.

    Hello again!
As far as I remember do all Casinos have :”Where allowed” on the sign up Form, where you put in Country and State.
I even had a guy ask me in MSN one time,to sign up at a Online Casino with my adress, cause in Baden-Würtemberg it is illegal.
Of course I did not do that.
So,my Impression was, that in a few States over here it is legal.
I will look into it,and let you know what I find out.
Sorry if I am wrong, but I keep you updated.
    Cheers,Connie

As far I know has online gambling been never legal in any state of germany
I growed up in Austria and lived there til 2 years ago,
and also in Austria people beleive online gambling is legal, but it is NOT
there is also a monopol, Casinos Austria and Lotteries own that.
And you may play and win only there.
Ok noone says a word, and as long you wont transfer any big wins like over 10K in one time to your bank, mostly all will be fine,
But i been reading there the statement of http://www.win2day.at (online gambling platform from Casinos Austria)
There it says clearly, You may play and win only at Casinos Austria or Lotteries. If they find out you won somewhere online, they will take away the money and you will get also a fine to pay.
In germany they want to protect also their monopolies, this is what is all about.
Now I just wait for the Netherlands, I heard Holland Casinos is already on it.

All our hopes are now the EU comission.

    Me again:)
Here is what I found so far:
I just post what sounds important, and translate it.

It is one of the most absurd Laws ever made in Germany.
There is nothing in Favour of this Contract.
Not only could it cost thousands of jobs, even the German Comission said it is unrightful?
We are talking about the Bettingstatescontract from Jan.1st,that allows offering of betting and lotteries only to the State, who also has to legally try to lower Gambling Addiction.
Private Betting Places have to step back, and every Way of Advertising for this Sin? is forbidden.
Two more Courtorders from different States realized so,that making a difference between East and West German Citizens is impossible.
And the per Law ordered Duty for Banks ,to block Banking from Betting Places and Casinos to German Customers seems impossible to do.

Sorry if this sounds even more confusing,I could not find the right words all the time.

That’s an accurate summary of the legal landscape in Germany at this point in time. I can’t imagine though that Nellie Kroes, the commissioner for competition will allow the blocking of online gambling at the ISP level. It would also generate quite a few false positives unless they are working with a list.

If they decide to ban sites like the Italian government (I’m italian), they’re going to redirect the DNS..and it’s not a big problem. Just use OpenDNS or foreigner DNS.
