Is it messed up?No – it just shows you the installer in action. When you register, you get given “installer.php”. You upload that to your server and run it – and thats what it lloks like when its running – just to show how straightforward it is – in theory

I’ll create a page that shows that later today. Basically as new sites add themselves to Slinky, the list of links (outbound and inbound) will gradually grow. How did the install go? All make sense ok?

InactiveIs it possible to make the initial set of links grow gradually to avoid the impression of instant link boost? As far as i know a big instant quantity of added links may look as bought links and may trigger a sandbox for a new site.

Although it probably wont have a big effect until there are substantial sites registered. I’m sure i can work out a way to do this though yes. Can probably make it configurable so a user can choose how many links are added each day. Thanks

Its security really – in order to prevent people from taking advantage of the system and conning other users with lower PR, blackhat sites etc.

The install was really easy. I really like this program so far. I’m so tired of making link exchanges with other sites only to have them remove my links later. This program guarantees an honest exchange.
Thanks for the work, Simmo.
I recommend this program for anyone out there currently doing manual link exchanges. This is a lot easier.
Simmo,
one more question. let’s say i want my recriprical link to point to an internal page on my site instead of my front page, it that possible?August 10, 2005 at 9:26 pm #670591Anonymous

One more suggestion. Is it possible to have multiple link text for the reciprocal link? This would help avoid google’s spam filter for having identical link text. perhaps during setup, we can give at least two different link texts, and the program randomly picks one to display.

I thought of this upfront and it asks you for two during setup although until it grows beyond a certain number of sites i havent coded any randomisation in just yet.In actual fact it’s geared to go a step further. Part of the install sets up a config.inc file which contains your link data. It is intended to work like Google sitemaps – you can edit this at any time and Slinky Central, when it pops in to check your links, also picks up the latest versions and updates the feeds with that. Still need to code that bit tho as I’m working on Slinky Central right now.
Simmo,
one more question. let’s say i want my recriprical link to point to an internal page on my site instead of my front page, it that possible?I thought about this long and hard – well short and hard actually – and decided for the time being not to allow this for two reasons. One is the technical implicatiosn, but much more importantly is the “quality” implication. My feeling is that an internal page that receives less visitors (potentially) is more open to blackhat/quality abuse compared to the more popular home page. It also is likely to have a better PR which benefits other Slinky users receiving links. And finally, it makes future development of Slinky easier to manage.
Maybe at a later date if i can figure out the best way to handle these issues.
Cheers

Does that mean you can’t run PHP at all PB? If so sorry about that – i had to decide on a technology and went for PHP based on the responses to my poll here: http://www.casinoaffiliateprograms.com/bb/technologies-please-take-a-second-to-vote.6373.html?&highlight=technologies
Seems like the most popular. That all said, there may be a way round it with a small mod as its mainly the installer that uses PHP and the links displayed could probably be adapted fron PHP to ASP. I developed the actual links feeds in RSS/XML format for cross-platform compatibility so if you can parse external XML feeds on your site we may be able to work out a way of getting it going? But i’m not “up” on .asp so may require a bit of help your end.

InactiveYou can install php on an asp server, so it really shouldn’t be a problem. I have several servers running both php and asp.
I also know asp quite well if there, so if there are any questions and they are posted at CAP I will do my best to answer them.
