InactiveI have one on all my sites, but theire very new. I’ve noticed pages are indexed alot faster now that it’s there. I still have lot’s to learn about them, but I did read if your site is spammy in nature, that google may be using your map to learn about that

InactiveSitemaps seem to be good for getting your pages indexed in Google and for letting them know when a page has been updated. If you are asking if they help you in ranking better, I would say no.

InactiveGoogle seems to be pushing to have a closer relationship with webmasters, they aren’t launching programs like sitemaps to “catch” people. As long as you are a webmaster on the up-and-up, running a useful site, Google wants you in their directory. It only makes sense for Google since the more webmasters trust them and have access to valuable tools (ie: Analytics), the more likely webmasters are to increase their spends on AdWords.
