For me it was link exchanging without thinking of SEO.
I run a sports betting site. But I visit a lot of other sites in that field that are interesting, have unique content that I liked.
I linked to them on the front page of my site .. not hidden away. I recommend them to my visitors as good places to go.
After sending these sites good traffic for a while, I contact them, and usually they are happy to reciprocate a link, a good link too.
It worked for me … 90% of my traffic comes through links I earned like that.
Yeah, I also don’t see how link exchanging is anything but helpful to the user. If I have 30 links on my poker site to other poker sites, that’s helpful for the user.
Link exchanges aren’t what they used to be for SEO, but they’re far from being useless.
Link exchanges with quality sites can give you some of the highest quality traffic. I’ve tried several PPC engines, and even the one’s that provide real clickthroughs don’t seem to give the best traffic. I’m basing this off of how many pages people click on BTW. The best sources are organic SERPs, quality link exchanges and forum postings (not forum spam, but quality posts).
I must agree that quality link exchanges are helpful for both getting better link popularity+PR and for getting traffic from the sites you trade with.
there’s no doubt that the directory type of link trades where links are buried 3-4 clicks (or more) from the index page and there are 100 links on that page will send you no traffic but will somewhat help your rankings.
on the other hand, when exchanging links with pages that are 1-2 clicks away from the index page using a visible link and contain a reasonable amount of links per page. Rankings and Traffic will get a more significant boost.
