InactiveThis has been the stance for along time , chance vs skill. But it will never completely be looked at as a game of skill by those that look at life as a game of half full or half empty. At least until the majority does.
IMO- Its how you approach the experience of playing the game. Some will play poker and win by chance and thats ok, “thats poker” but many of the pro’s of the game take a difference approach to playing poker and thats why they usually win, time and time again. There are many factors to the game and only time will tell how the masses will look at this exilarating game we all have learned to enjoy.

winsernMemberThe more I practice or play-the more lucky I get
I have dealt with skill or luck issues here in Texas, our games have skill stops on the reels and “hold” for pairs,,,, we have proven skill in a blind test over 2000 spins each, one not using skill etc. vs one that does— they player who uses the skill prevails the majority of the time, which puts skill over luck, thus allowing the machines to be certified as skill machines…. I think of poker as a fishing contest, you can get lucky and catch a big one and win, but you cant get skillfull that moment,if your not (of course they all lie)… it has the same elements as gambling, bet, consideration and prize…. A single hand of poker cannot determine skill or luck… the test would be to put non-players against pros, and have a very long contest….any long term contest and the pros will eventually win out- kinda like the house in vegas eh… they have the odds in thier favor- even if just a little bit…… frogMay 4, 2007 at 10:01 pm #735684
winsernMemberHow about this theory,,,,, If you can make yourself lose- its skill— If you really want to get fun- most gambling laws give a defense to a contest of endurance also- look it up– you can have a game of poker that includes both of these elements- skill and endurance—-just has to be “bonafide” you got to know when to hold em,,,, no when…. seems there is alot of truth to kenny Rogers song eh.. InactiveThere is skill involved in poker, but it still is a game of chance. The skill is in reducing the chance that you lose, but the game ulimately depends on luck. Not to mention, last year’s WSOP tournament saw many major names (high skill players) out in the first round. Many examples could be given to prove how hands ultimately come down to luck.
Just as blackjack is a game of chance. There is skill involved in blackjack. The more ‘skilled’ you are, the lower your odds of losing, but ultimately it comes down to luck. Many examples could be given to prove how it all ultimately comes down to luck.
The point is that poker is gambling, and poker players need to stop the fight to prove it isn’t and join the general fight to repeal the UIGEA with the rest of Internet gambling community.

winsernMemberI agree in a short amount of hands and chips, that chance, luck can seem to be the factor in determining the outcome, but given the overall value of one players skill over another in a contest that is not time valued nor limited by funds, skill will predominate everytime….. again I point to my example of the house having the odds, even if they are slim…… Luck in blackjack!!!Ask a card counter if he’s lucky in blackjack!! Or better ask the casinos. If blackjack is played to the best ability possible- skill will predominate over luck… Luck is a chance happening or that which happens beyond a persons control, luck is often regarded as superstition….Skill is an ability, usually learned and aquired through training, to perform actions which achieve a desired outcome. An equation to work out the perfect way to get the best skill required is –Skill=ability+technique…… if a superior skilled player loses to a lucky guy— that in no way takes away the advantage the skilled player had before coming into the game in the beginning. InactiveCase in point:
I won the Everest tournie in Amsterdam and have no idea what I am doing. I haven’t been playing enough poker to even safely know which cards I am hoping for.
Blackjack I know more about and I can play that rationally, poker I play on the seat of my pants. ( I plan to fix that! It’s a fun game.)
So the element of luck can be dominant in poker as well as any other game. Everyone at those tables was more skilled than me by a very long shot.
That said, I do believe that skill improves your CHANCE of winning a lot, and skill is a factor. Skill is also a factor in tetris or Blackjack etc. Even in slots, where the skill is more a matter of experience which teaches you when to stop, and things like playing all the lines and alternating coin values. All games are better played when you have experience and the type of skill you get from that.
The whole issue has little to do IMO with the fact that it’s bad for the entire industry to splinter up, and seperating poker from the rest of the games fragments the effort.
The same principle applies most anyplace: Together we are strong!
