GuestThis just in from RiverCity:
Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., who has been trying to ban online wagering for about
10 years, had planned to introduce an online gambling prohibition amendment
today by attaching it to S2349 (the Lobbying Reform Act). However, the
debate over the Lobbying Reform bill was sidelined by a proposed amendment
aimed at preventing a United Arab Emirates company from managing several key
US ports. It would appear that now the U.S. Senate will take up the
lobbying reform bill next week but the bipartisan managers of that bill have
pledged to disallow any non-germane amendments to that bill as drafted. This
would eliminate the opportunity for Senator Kyl to move his prohibition bill
in the Senate by attaching it to this particular vehicle. IGN will continue
monitoring this situation and keep you apprised.March 9, 2006 at 11:19 pm #685845
vladcizsolMemberLets hope this port issue keeps them occupied for awhile. The more things that interest them the better.

GuestHi,
I’m with you Int, I was very pleased to see majority of votes whether for or against gambling, said it should not be made illegal for the obvious logical reasons.
its a sad and true fact that there are a percentage of people who succumb to the evils of overindulgence and I don’t even argue the fact that some are predispositioned to fall victim,…
but its a slippery slope and so where do you draw the line? tell people they can’t gamble, eat foods that are destined to kill them surely as you’re reading this,… smoke,…
there are a hell of a lot of vices, hobbies and for that matter …. legal jobs which are a much bigger threat to the people involved than is gambling even to those known to become addicts. At least going broke doesn’t kill you.
Following the govt’s line of thinking of being able to tell us what we can and can’t do (for our own good – man it pisses me to write that; the b#strds!) with our own property, time and/or money then all jobs which are well known to have a dangerous edge to them should be outlawed. After all, is not losing your husband to death by job accident not more tramatic to a family than losing their house because dad fell behind on the mortgage?
… I realize that’s not a perfect analagy but it makes the point well enough.
where is the line drawn? why is it okay to force their will upon me for one thing that is considered bad … (for a small % of the people) when its not right to then say … make it illegal to go mountain climbing without ropes or safety devices like some of those idiots do (no offense meant to any rock climbers reading this: …. I’m sure you’re the exception that proves the rule :hattip: :colgate: )
but you get what I’m saying. Or to go out into the desert without any water …. not illegal. Just stupid!
the whole thing is a bad taste in my mouth and makes me absolutely want to spit on these hypocrytes that want to impose their will and values on me in the privacy of my own damn bedroom for pete’s sake!

InactiveThat gets me so angry that they even THINK they can ban gambling. I dont know what the hell they’re thinking of, but i bet almost all the people in congress have gambled, they would be hypocrites to make a law like that. Besides, over 85% – 90% of the country is against that ban, it shows total incompetence for the congress to ban something that almost all of America agree with! If ANYTHING, congress should put their concern on banning pork barreling and useless corrupt spending before they even think about banning gambling dammit! For fucking petes sake! Thats like banning alcohol and sex! no one! and i said NO ONE can ban gambling. Its almost part of the America culture to begin with! If they pull a ban on gambling out of their ass, who the hell is going to enforce that law! everyone gambles, even the police! I sure as hell wont follow a law like that, and in the constitution, it says if all the people in america disagree with the law, they can ignore it and theres not a damm thing the law or government can do about it, the law WILL NOT work! I voted no and i think its a complete joke that congress is even thinking banning gambling, i dont know who the brillient bonehead was that came up with the idea thinks he is!
my two cents

InactiveIn the APCW Perspectives Magazine due out in Amsterdam, we have an interview with Goodlattes Legislative Director, Branden Ritchie.
I won’t go into details (you gotta read the magazine), but in the layout of the article I listed famous quotes from great Americans that apply to this subject:
“In a free and republican government, you cannot restrain the voice of the multitude. ”
~ George Washington
“If it becomes popular and everyone is doing it, then it’s not the job of government to prohibit it.”
~ Fiorello LaGuardia
“In free governments the rulers are the servants and the people their superiors…”
~ Benjamin Franklin
“Government exists for the interests of the governed, not for the governors…”
~ Thomas Jefferson
“America is supposed to be the bastion of freedom, yet we thrive on prohibition.”
~ Jesse Ventura
“A government is like fire, a handy servant, but a dangerous master”
~ George Washington
