InactiveIn my case (2 packages/day about 10 years ago) , it was a 4 months process to quit smoking.
First challenge was to have the first smoke after lunch.
Second was the first cigarette about 4 pm.
Third after dinner. Etc Etc.Then I had some days without smoking, one week, one month, and one day I had no longer desires for cigarettes.

InactiveHi more4me,

I’m really pulling for you my friend. I have smoked for about 20 years and I’m in the mode of wanting to quit, but not really strong enough to give it up yet.
After reading your post, I’m going to make a real effort to cut my 6 cigs a day down gradually until I can hopefully quit.
My husband really makes a big deal of it everytime I get ready to stand outside on the patio to smoke or if we are in the car I sit in the back so I can roll down the window, etc.
Reading about how sick your furkid is stuck a cord with me because my little furkid sometimes make strange breathing noises and I wonder if it’s from being near me while I smoke.
I hope your little one is doing better and continue to do good healthwise as well as you.
I wish you the very best of luck and give me a buzz if you need to talk.

InactiveHeya again
Yes the book is by Allan Carr and it is called ‘Easy Way to Stop Smoking’
It can’t hurt to give it a try.
Good luck!September 12, 2007 at 11:59 pm #748572
affiliategodMemberWOW! TY so much everyone for your replies and pm’s. This is going to be tougher then I thought. I did have a commit lozenge first thing when I got up today and I do have to say, I didn’t crave a cig. But then, I got aggrivated, ripped apart the house and found a pack:( I obviously need to find another way to deal with stress.
I really DO want to quit! I did go through the house and there is not another pack here. I obviously cannot have them in the house. There are 3 cigs left in the pack that I found and it may sound silly but, I just can’t throw them out. I will NOT buy another pack! I refuse! When the 3 are gone, it’s back to suckin’ on the lozenges and am off to check on the book that Renee suggested.
I do feel imbarrassed and so weak that I smoked today. Especially after asking all of you for help. I keep telling myself, I am only human and as humans, we slip and make mistakes. It’s not helping much, though.
Anyone who quit have a suggestion for dealing with stress instead of picking up, “the crutch”?

InactiveI started out the door on a walk every time I wanted one, by the time I got back I forgot why I went walking, the excercise didn’t hurt either. lol
September 13, 2007 at 12:38 am #748581
affiliategodMemberWalk and exercise have not been in my vocabulary since I was a wee 18. At that time I was a serious gymnist. Perhaps this old dog needs to “retrain”. lol
I do, frequently, take power walks at night when I get aggrivated. Which does give me a serious sence of accomplishment. Especially so as I was in a car accident back in 2002, broke the 6th and 7th vertabre my neck and was told I would never walk again.
Unfortunately, at this time, it seems it was easier to walk again when it seemed all odds were against me then, quitting smoking. I know I can do this. Once I get something in my head, I do it. It’s just a matter of getting started.

InactiveI believe in you more4me..
I have a few cousins who were hardcore junkies… Not just anything either, Crystal Meth AKA Ice.
3 of them were lucky enough to have the help to get off it. One slipped but has since had help again. Unfortunately the other wasn’t so lucky and doesn’t even recognise me anymore. I don’t think he has very long to live if he doesn’t get off it, but he is far beyond help.
Anyway my point is that if you have support, and looking here you have a lot of it, you can do anything. Pick up a hobby. Learn how to do something you’ve always wanted to learn. And when you feel like a ciggy, practise that thing.
Things to do to relieve stress – I have a diary which I write in ONLY when I am stressed (seems to be a lot lately). Write in it, then read what you wrote the next day. You’ll most likely laugh at yourself. AND it takes 2 min+ to write in there so you’ve escaped that craving. You’ll also have something to look back on in years to come and realise how strong you were to quit

You could always get a friend to chain you to the house too
Although that wouldn’t be as fun as learning something new.September 13, 2007 at 1:21 am #748585
affiliategodMemberYou could always get a friend to chain you to the house too
Unfortunately, that is a MAJOR part of my problem. As I am chaind to the house. Yes, I can walk and power walk at that but, only on days when I feel like I can. The doc who fixed my neck did a terrific job on my neck but….messed up my hip. Where he took the bone from my hip to put in my neck, he replaced that bone with putty which dislodged and is mia in my body. Where the hole in my hip is now, I have nerves that get hung up and partially severed at times. I know it sounds gross but, it has become a normal part of my life. When the nerves get hung up, my leg goes totally numb. Leaving me with only one leg to walk with which, I am sure you can understand, is impossible. It happens mostly when I squat say to pick up leaves in the yard to when I am bending. It does hapen quite often as I do enjoy working out in the yard.
I have been fighting with the ins. co. weekly for years with no luck. Unfortunately, it has been too many years to sue. It was suggested to ne years ago to sue but, I did not wish to go through the litigation. I just wanted to be physically fixed. I am the one who is skrewed now due to having faith in my ins. co. I cannot afford medical ins. If I could, I would have simply take the matter into my own hands and been fixed.
In short(lol), I am afraid to drive. My Mom’s car has been sitting in the criveway dead for 2 years. I have not gotten it up an running as I am afraid that my leg my go numb and God forbid, I would hit a child running across the street. Therefore, I rely on taxis which are VERY expencive around here. $30 just to go to the closest grocery. It is not always affordable as I cannnot collect disablility as the doc who operated on me refuses to fill out my disability papers. He does not feel it his responsibility. WTF? If it’s not his responsiblility, who’s is it? I called the state and they informed me, it was the docs “choice” that he was not obgiliated by law to fill out the paperwork. I solely rely on my affiliate money which, you know from my affil account, is not much. Actually, I have only been paid by you once and that was months ago.
Didn’t mean to go off on a rant. My point was, I am basically stuck here and tend to wallow in problems when they do arise.

InactiveDear more4me,
I really congratulate you for taking the right decision: it’s the best for you and your family.
There are certainly a lot of books, parches, pills, medicines, etc. which will reduce your nicotine dependence; however the real desire to quit smoking is inside you.
You need to help your brain and body to get over the desire of having a smoke, stop thinking about it all the time, and start living a normal healthy life.My family owns an alternative medicine center, where we practice yoga, meditations, breathing exercises, etc, as well as we help with fighting addictions, stress, anxiety and other similar problems.

We have worked with a lot of smokers, and our results have been very successful. Please consider the following:
1. Breathing exercises (you can also do them with your kid, and it will help with his asthma):
Put a hand on your abdomen and, as you inhale deeply, feel your stomach expand as though it were being filled like a balloon. Now let the air out and feel your stomach return to its normal position. As you do the exercise, pause comfortably at the end of each exhalation until you feel ready to take the next deep breath. You can achieve even greater relaxation if you close your eyes during deep breathing and let your mind focus on a restful scene or a word like calm or anything else which gives you a peaceful feeling.
Keeping your eyes closed, breathe in deeply, let your stomach expand until your lungs are filled. Now pause for a moment and then exhale until you have emptied your lungs. Pause for a moment. Take another deep breath in, filling your lungs from the bottom. Hold a moment…and now let the air flow out, focusing your mind on restful thoughts. Keeping the pace regular, again breathe in deeply…hold a moment…and now let the air out, feeling more and more relaxed. Take another breath in…hold it for a moment…now gently breathe out, letting the tension escape from your body. Once more breathe in…pause a moment…now exhale, feeling deep relaxation. This ends the exercise.
2. Yoga
You can certainly find a lot of link on Internet. To start, check out this one: http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/yoga-and-health/yoga-for-asthma-and-bronchitis.asp
3. Meditation
This can guide you through meditation process: http://www.solveyourproblem.com/quit-smoking/quit_smoking_techniques_music_meditation.shtml
I wish you the best of luck with what you’ve proposed, and don’t give up!! :wavey:
Natalie.

affiliategodMemberNatalie,
Thank you for your post. I have been searching for relaxation techniques but all I keep coming up with is the breathing exercise you have posted here. I do keep trying it but at stressful times, I find it difficult to concentrate. I had totally forgotton about yoga. I used to do it back in my gymnast days. Seemed to be the only thing that got the aches out. That, I will definately look to get back into as I do know it helps. If you have any other helpful links regarding yoga, they would be appreciated.
I laid down for a nap earlier and woke up about a 1/2 hour ago….ciggieless. Had a lozenge and am chewing on a toothpick.lol I did have to change my clothes as they stunk like smoke from earlier. Think I’m gonna go out in the backyard and see if my furkid wants to wrestle. We could both due for some exercise. Me thinks it’s gonna be a looong night but……no ciggies!
September 13, 2007 at 10:35 am #748624
affiliategodMemberMore4me please promise us you wont smoke again without at least talking to us and waiting for two or more responses. Friends can help and if you can make it through even 10 minutes the urge to light up will pass. So take advantage of the former smokers here and lets get you through this.
Ok, taking advantage! Had 2 lozenges since I last posted but, am still craving a cig. Went and wrestled with my old man (furkid) in the backyard and that did pass some time. Guess it was better for him as he’s still outside snoring to beat the band. I’ve always been an insomniac but, am thinkin’ it’s going to be worse until I beat this:(
Natalie.
As per your previous post, I do appreciate you thinking of my “Kid” as far as the breathing exercises. Unfortunately, my “kid” is what I call a ‘furkid”. Stands on all 4’s. Still costs me $160 per month in prescriptions. I can’t even affod med coverage for myself but, would do anything fur him:

He’s got his breathing problem down to a science. He has a bad day, Mom goes to console him, he rolls on his side, lifts his paw and I scratch his chest. He has no problems breathing then.lol

InactiveDon’t give up.
I smoked for 21 years and decided to give up when I realised how smoking was influencing my life.
Although I picked up about 15 pounds since I stopped, my quality of like has increased remarkably and I am now more fit that I was at 18.
I used patches and gum.
You will crave for the rest of your life, but you can quickly control cravings.

affiliategodMember15 lbs. I am not afraid of as I weigh all of 100lbs soaking wet. I wish I could take up snacking. Unfortunately, I am not a “sweets” nor chips person. I have never been a snacker. When I am hungry, I tend to just eat a balanced meal no matter what time of day it is.

InactiveHey more4me, I hope you’re having a smoke free day today and doing ok with it. When you crave take a load of clothes or linens to the wash machine and get rid of that old smell that won’t be back again!
