InactiveI can understand why you would be frustrated, the justice system is such a joke. But even if a year sounds light, take into consideration that he’ll wake up in jail for 365 days, that’s going to suck for him! But he deserved it.
Yet, I read somewhere that someone is going to get 8 years for spamming, and i have heard of people getting longer for selling weed. The government really needs to set its priorities straight. There is nothing worse than causing physical harm to someone.

GuestThat’s so true A. It really makes you wonder what the law makers are thinking when they send out a message such as “hit a guy with a blunt object in process of robbery” and get 1 year.
Sell a bag of pot and get 5 years.
the first will likely get you much more profit. Hmmmmn… what’s a criminal mind going to choose as the best risk factor?
most professional criminals are very aware of the different amounts of time you’d get for a respective crime. Why do you think the crack houses use kids as lookouts?
If that guy had gotten 8 yrs I guarantee it would have sent a whole different message to would be thieves in Las Vegas.
It would have said to them that they may threaten, but if they go thru with an act that they are going to do serious time.
I ask you, just how much less time would the man have recieved if he’d only held the brick up and threatened while robbing?
couldn’t have been too damn much less, after all, he only received a year.
That’s what that decision sent as a message to the people of Las Vegas. How disgusting!

InactiveThe most important thing here is that you are ok …
I know it sucks that justice wasnt fully served, and it sure seems like someone was doing someone a favor. I mean a swinging a brick to throwing rocks … thats simpy BS!

I agree. That and stealing from the elderly or hurting children are the things I would penalize to the hilt. Torturing animals is pretty despicable too.
Our justice system is pretty upside down in many ways.
But at least I will not be running into this guy in Vegas next year – thank you for that, Integrity. One year in jail and deportation ought to keep him out of Vegas for some time. (not that he won’t sneek back across the border.)
Thank you for standing up for yourself, Integirty, by doing so you stood up for all of us also.
Happy holidays!

GuestFirst, I am so glad that you are still alive and recovered, and that the guy is getting the slammer for a year…
But, you think YOUR justice system sux?
This is what would have happened in sunny SA.
You would have waited for the cops for an hour, and an ambulance for at least 20-30 mins if you are lucky. Oh, if on a weekend, double that. After getting patched up, you would have to go to the police station yourself, or wait a day or so for a detective. You would have had to hang around in the charge office for another hour, where some incompetent officer tried to write your statement down, spelling and grammar mistakes everywhere.
Then, you would be sent on your merry way, because the chap managed to walk away and no-one would want to be a witness. You would be very lucky if he was caught, and even luckier to spend no less than 2 full days waiting in the courts for the case to come before a judge.
In the meantime, an incompetent officer who took your statement will probably lose part or all of your file. Then the prosecutor, who is underpaid, doesn’t really care too much about your case, will probably not oppose a bail of something equivelant to $20.
And, if you are REALLY lucky, the guy will pitch up in court. If he isn’t there, they will not tell you and you can write off a few days sitting around waiting. This whole process has taken three months so far.
And, if convicted, the slap on the wrist for a first time offence, with a fine of say $500, and the fine suspended for three years etc.
I think you guys have it too good! I am amazed at how quickly this was sorted out – well done!

InactiveAgain, thanks for all your support…
You guys & gals are never at a lack for kind words. :tounge2:
When I was in Vegas I went back to the very spot this happened… the bricks were still there… it was one of those things I needed to do for myself. Then I went back to Excalibur and got a margaritta in an identical glass to the one that was shattered that night….
…it was delicious. :drink:
=======================
Jon-Jon it sounds like we really don’t know how much worse it could be for us over here. I hope we never find out… and I hope your country can solve those issues.
It’s true that the system here didn’t work “perfectly”, but it did work. For that I am thankful. And even if this guy had gotten 10 years, nothing would have changed in my life… and that wouldn’t stop crime 100%… so I’m just happy I’m alive… happy I see my daughter every day… happy I live here and do this for my living… and most happy that he will be some big gang member’s sex doll for the next several months.
After all… what are the odds that something like this will ever happen to me again?

vladcizsolMemberWith any luck your “friend” will have a very large and overly virile cell mate for the next year who likes to “play rough” when the lights go out.

InactiveHi J,
Glad to hear the asshole got some time in the pen. The main thing is you are okay my friend. Happy Holidays!December 22, 2004 at 12:00 am #659093Anonymous
InactiveJ. Todd,
Good for you for taking the time to fly to Vegas for the sentencing.
At least you managed to get the guy the max sentence. It’s highly unlikely the judge would have given him more than 3 months if you had not been there.
It’s a shame that crimes are plea-bargained down to save time, but that’s the sad reality of the criminal justice system.
I hope you have healed well enough to enjoy the holiday season.

InactiveThe sentence sounds a bit light to me.
He would have got more if you were hurt more, so I am glad he got a light sentence.
Happy Christmas.
