think the guys who created Links Manager are pretty honest and sharp … but I always updated my pages manually and quite frankly it was a pain in the ass

I totally agree – Joel is a great guy and I have found him to possess a great deal of integrity, and I’ll still tell him LM is a lazy mans tool! (Joel runs a very well known portal – some of you may know him.)

And yes, I have always updated manually too – and its a real bitch the more sites you have, but I think if you want to work hard at maintaining it you will reap the rewards. With that said I believe there was a period of at least six months where all I did was ignore link request all together – I didnt have time to update dozens of links on dozens of sites. I was the perfect candidate for LM, but IMHO I always thought the minuses outweighed the pluses. To this day I still hard code ALL links on ALL sites!

The whole purpose of making a website was to put some quality content on it, to make a site worth visiting – but linking is distracting and total bullshit if it’s only to bluff google into thinking you’re important.

    YES & YES/no

The primary goal should still be creating a quality site, however with that said I know a lot of webmasters could careless about quality – they’d just assume put up 2000 websites – 98% duplicated – and wait for the trap to spring. (To each his own.) Regarding linking – it’s awful to say, but in order to keep pace with the Jones’s you have to join in the masquerade to some extent. I just recently started exchanging home page links on a few of my sites – I felt this was necessary in order to maintain myself.

You know what since, Joel decided to basically poo poo my “allegations” rather then acknowledge a potential problem or attempt to investigate further I am going to cancel all my accounts tomorrow.

Thanks for reporting this thread Fergie you are saving me about $500 a month.

Fregie really thats the only answer. Manual link exchanges with reliable and respected partners is the only way to go.

I held out for a long time and didn’t like automated link exchanges in the beginning. The ONLY reason I went automated at about 20 of my newer sites was I felt guilty for not responding faster to webmasters who were requesting link exchanges. With hundreds of sites to maintain I cant process manual requests in an expediant manner. I had really hoped that through automation I could get around that logistics problem.

And in fairness to Links Manager if people were not so damned dishonest their system would have been a perfect fit for my needs.

Oh well, leave it to people to mess up a generally good thing by abusing peoples trust.

With the race for links since “Florida” I have considered doing just that! With a dedicated link marketer/manager you could expect both the quality and quantity of links to increase dramatically. I am still undecided as to whether I will take that approach in the near future.

In the case I was talking about, it was much bolder. I didn’t have a link on his site redirecting through a script. I had no link whatsoever on the site.

He actually placed a link to the script (with my url as a parameter) in the “where the recip link is” section on Linksmanager.

Really no big deal and easily noticed… I was just pointing out how moronic some of these people are, above and beyond them being unsophisticated scam artists.

Don’t give in to the dark side. You won’t be “keeping pace”, unless your goal is to hurl yourself into an expanding black hole. Anything more than a very few off domain links on the front page is becoming a sign of low quality (and again, whether it is or not is not really important). Also, in terms of pagerank, unless the site you are linking to has significantly higher PR than you, its a waste to do these links. You would be better off linking internally to your content pages.

The only two reasons you should be linking off your front page (besides to casino entities) are user friendliness, or to send the search engine bots a message of: “hey, look at me, I know what a high quality site is, come check me out more.”

    Eeew.

I have a load of links where I have’nt asked 2/3 of the sites to link back so could never check lol and am not sold on those auto link things atall either.

Aside from that when someone pulls up a flaw in your stuff you had better do better than to come with an answer that is borderline patronisation.

In so doing all one can to improve their wares they take quantifiable feedback like the Prof offered as gold dust or run the risk of losing their mind stuck up so high in their ivory tower.

I have had the same experience as the Professor with links manager. Link exchanging no matter how you go about it should be honest. It takes everyone’s time to do it and if done correctly benifits all link partners. The cheaters in the end lose, but still have stolen all of our time. I to will be discontinuing use of links manager in the near future. For the rest of this summer I am on vacation, but when I return to work full time time this fall I will be interested in quality link exchanges on hard coded html good pr pages. Thank you Professor for bring to light here at CAP this problem.

Thank you Professor! You just made up my mind on whether to use a different links manager. Good by Linksmanager!!!

This will cause a lot of work, but well worth the effort!

I don’t have a linksmanager on 1 of my sites and none on the other and it doesn’t really make a lot of difference.

Anyone that finds a good links manager, please let me know.

Actually I have found a superb program. It is a manual link exchange program. Windows based. It generates your link pages for you and stores them in a database.

It is strictly for manual exchanges but makes it easy to manage them. You can sort in a number of ways so you don’t have duplicate links pages. You can give links “weight” to make some appear at the tops of pages, there are categories, etc….

The program outputs your hard coded .html files for you and even includes a way for you to setup .html template files so the pages match your stuff.

Here is a link to the software:

I was hording this secret, but too many friends need this… here you go!

These pages were generated by the software and are a good example of the template feature: http://www.coloradogamblingforum.com/directory.htm

This page is new and has no PR.

Also very cool programmer, installed features for me (such as the different sorting options) just for emailing him. Got me updates in minutes
