Somebody said my site isn’t in alexa.com.

I know alexa.com but don’t know about the importance.

I know they have a ranking.
But it is not such a big search engine as google or yahoo.

Please post your comments about alexa.com.

    Hi Cat,

Alexa is a nice relative tool to compare your site to others.

It is actually a hidden application that monitors how many people enter a site through their browser add-ons.

So you have a lot of webmasters and internet professionals that have that hidden application installed. There are advantages and disadvantages for being part of this community.

Some believe the Google algorithm also uses Alexa rankings – might be a rumor.

    Hope this helps,

But Alexa isn’t a true indication of the visiting history of a website or of it’s popularity. If it is a tool that webmasters and marketers use then it shows a measure of how popular a site is to that audience and nothing else.

The average Joe Bloggs hasn’t got a clue what Alexa no will he / she contribute to their stats.

Alexa can be a good or bad tool to measure traffic. If not bamboozled with it can be good. But many webmasters use software like Alexa Booster and it will give false results.

Even Google PR im seeing has it flaws. Google seems to put alot of emphasis on Backlinks, more then genuine traffic. You can have sites with little to no traffic with tons on Back’s have a PR4-5. Sites with good traffic and little links are still at 1-2

I have always thought Alexa’s data is highly overrated. IMO there’s very strong biases in their data. On the upside, at least the sample set is large thesedays.

If you want real data you can actually trust, go for Hitwise. Yes it’s exxy, but it will pay itself back very quickly.

I use it for fun but dont take it seriously. It is a good estimation for comparisson but I believe both sites should be in same market as I think most users are from US. ?

Its not really a hidden application. Its a browser toolbar. Like all your other browser toolbars, you have the option to make it hidden.

Alexa rating isn’t really accurate for measuring your traffic vs the rest of the internet because yes we all know that webmasters and internet marketers are the majority of toolbar users and those type of websites will get higher rankings easier because their traffic is from webmasters. But alexa ranking can give you a good idea of your traffic compared to other websites in your niche. As casino webmasters we all get pretty much the same type of traffic and we should have approximately the same percentage of visitors with the toolbar installed. Most average internet users don’t even know what alexa is and don’t know that the toolbar is even installed on their computer because alexa has many contracts with software companies that package their toolbar with other software. If the user has spyware software installed then they usually remove it because although harmless, it is a class of spyware and the average user don’t know what it does.

…But many webmasters use software like Alexa Booster and it will give false results…

That doesn’t work anymore. There is no software out there that will increase your alexa rankings. If you find something that claims it does then go ahead and waste your money but you will be in for a big disappointment.

Some believe the Google algorithm also uses Alexa rankings – might be a rumor.

I have also heard this before but I have no idea on its accuracy or even how much of an effect it would have on your rankings.

If you sell advertising on your website on a cost per thousand banner impressions (CPM) basis then you need to work a way to to get into Alexa’s rating system. This is how advertisers traditionally find you.

If you work the common affiliate model whereby you direct traffic to gamingsites (for example) and then ultimately receive a percentage of any revenues/deposits then don’t worry about it :hattip:

Unless you are in the 100k it is not worth comparing your site in alexa as the variance can be huge from actual hits to the position you are showed. I have seen my sites go higher in alexa when I have fewer hits. If you make the top 100k then Alexa is worth paying attention to.
