InactiveWingate said online casinos that don’t block access to their Web sites in Kentucky could be ordered to forfeit their domain names.
That is completely ridiculous. Since when is it a crime to VIEW a website ABOUT online gambling, or anything, for that matter? As far as I know, I think child pornography is the only thing that may actually be illegal to view.

InactiveUgly precedent determined by a judge who obviously doesn’t understand the ramifications. This will be appealed, and if not overturned, will escalate into the biggest Internet issue of its existence. Freedom of speech violations, illegal economic protectionism, stupidity, are just a few of things that come to mind.

InactiveThis is the most asinine crap i have ever seen in my life. People need to step up and do something out this BS. This in KY??? Huh?? … yeah I’m sure gamblers placing online horse wagers are killing your profits. Be men and take it for what it is boys and girls. Come on everyone knows it’s the backing of the major league sports organizations / Vegas for more propaganda to see what you all can get away with and how far to bend the American citizens rights.
Our country has WAY more problems to addresses before this should even be an issue on the table. Then they wonder why this country is so messed up, use some common sense.
This is absolutely crazy!!….guys my age are dieing everyday and this governor is worried more about this shit and wasting resources and tax money on an issue just because they can’t figure out how to get their cut….makes me sick!!!

InactiveI don’t condsider it a win yet at least, but like it has been said the word needs to get out to the public, without that this crap can go on without being noticed by the people of KY! I hope the extra time for the trial is going to give the lawyers against this damn mess good enough time to get a decent case built up against it! So trial after the election..hmmm

InactiveThis is about so much more than online gambling. If it goes through, it basically sets the precedent that the US government can confiscate any website from it’s owner if they don’t like the content. It’s censorship on the same level as the old Russia and China.
If ICANN comply with any request, then you have to also wonder about their future, or lack of it, and the future of the Internet in general.

Inactive“Judge Thomas Wingate said in an order Thursday afternoon that he will hear arguments on Nov. 17 before deciding whether to give Kentucky state government control of the domain names of 140 of the Internet’s most popular gambling Web sites.”
What are these 140 sites? How can one state in America seize domains that could be registered and hosted anywhere in the world and have fuck all to do with America?

InactiveIf these 141 gaming sites do in fact comply and block traffic to KY, this will obviously set an ugly precedent for the remaining 50 states and gambling. I am hoping that all these gambling sites are re-registering their domains outside the US with alternate names. This will require them to use affiliates more than ever, since these new domain names won’t get the search engine ranking that their existing names enjoy.
On a separate note, I am working with an attorney in my state, to have the following industries (and their corresponding 5,098,678 websites) have their domain names confiscated, due their immoral effect on society (and yes, I’m using the KY decision of yesterday as the basis for my precedent):
– Pornography
– Horse Racing
– Lotteries
– Credit Card Companies
– Mortgage Companies
– Cigarette companies
– Alcohol companies….just to name a few…….

LOL – excellent. Don’t forget to add http://www.stevebeshear.com/ to the list. I love a bit of irony

By the way – anyone at all worried by the fact he’s a Democrat?
October 17, 2008 at 7:42 pm #782902Anonymous
InactiveThe fact that he is a Democrat seemed to be a bit of an oxymoron. However, his state has one of the worst unemployment and per capita rates in the States. This is a desperate (and unedcuated, I might add) measure by him to add to the state’s revenue, and for him to come out looking like a hero (except for the in-state Poker and Casino players). My guess is that if the decision is ever enforced, this is something that will escalate to the Supreme Court. There are obvious technical workarounds for in-state players, but the real losers in this will be our beloved gambling sites. Ironically, if they are forced to re-brand, this will undoubtedly be a boon for affiliates. Nonetheless, I hope this just withers away and dies.

Blimey. Wasn’t intended to be offensive! And I did say the old Russia meaning pre-Iron Curtain!! Apologies if it caused any offense but I didn’t realise it was a sensitive subject.

InactiveIt doesn’t matter what evidence is given or shown. A judge almost always has a predetermined decision made up before the case has even started. It’s human nature.
Its like someone fighting a speeding ticket, who will the judge listen to the cop or the guy with the ticket? It doesn’t matter who is right or wrong.
So the judge decided beforehand he wanted this to move on to the next stage. It doesn’t mean we have lost yet just that he didn’t want it to be thrown out.
And as for censorship and all that stuff the USA is as guilty as China, but they pull it off much more gracefully.
