    kw,

This sounds like an adware infection of some sort.

If you want a hand trying to figure it out, let me know and I will try and help over the phone….

….ummmm….maybe I should rephrase theabove…..I can’t really give you a hand since I just happened to have broke my arm Tuesday night, I need my remaining hand in a futile attempt at single handed typing….but I will try and help anyway….lol

    Hi all,

Rick….. and I’m sure its the same as Universal at GPWA …… is totally trustworthy in that I trusted him in opening my PC to him at one time …… years ago …… never had a problem …. and he fixed mine.

just an opinion of my experience. I hope best for you Andy.

    Andy,
I would say it’s most likely a banner of some sort. But, if you’re worried….

    from cmd line…
“netstat -b -a” , will show you details on what connections you have open, and which program is responsible.

Also, these tools will be handy
    – TCP/udp endpoint viewer
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Networking/TcpView.mspx
    – Shows everything that loads on startup, can verify code signatures.
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx
    Excellent process viewer.

I can suggest you to use antivirus NOD32 I have use it for a long time and never had a problem with viruses.

I agree 100% nod32 is the best by far :)

I have something similar – I hear a voice that says ‘you must assassinate Gordon Brown’ then all these lights start flashing and I see blood dripping down the walls, and the crazy thing is this is all
outside the computer!! These viruses just get more and more sophisticated, it seems even the latest updates can’t keep up with them. :1circling

We all know who it is: >>> :santa2:

Seriously, I agree it’s the AIM or AOL. I recall hearing sounds from it as well.

I am running AIM and will definitely check that out – thanks for all the advice guys. I’ll keep you posted today as I wait for GW to emminate from my PC. After that happens, I’ll shut down AIM and wait.

Rick – thanks for the offer – Funny enough, but I troubleshoot PCs and servers most days, so I should be able to figure it out myself :) I did run AVG, Symantec, AND Adaware – nothing turned up but cookies from the usual places.

Tristan – Thanks for that… I already have all the tools from sysinternals on my PC and did not notice anything untoward using TCPView.

Seems like it is pointing towards AIM. I’ll have to watch it.

    thanks again guys!!!!

Though this is probably not going to help you…

Try to ignore the voices you hear, they will soon go away if you stop listening…though the blue meanies can get real nasy:tongue:

    hehe

Good luck trying to fix….sounds like a very freaky virus…set the scene…3AM…alone in your house…working away…suddenly your PC starts talking to you…thats gotta freak anyone out

This is a weird one, just out of interest does this still happen when your PC is off? Say if your out at the shops, do you still hear the noise?

Maybe you need to see the shrink! :wink-wink

    Well KW,

Start in the normal places, hkey/local and current user run. Don’t forget winlogon/notify.

    Check the IE addons.

Run hijack this to look for stray exe’s and dll’s that could be the culprit.

Sorry, I would have recommended the registry diving earlier, but only if you’re comfortable in there.

You may want to go into your control panel and check the Sounds and Audio Devices applet to see if someone (or something) associated that sound with a particular event, such as minimizing a program, closing a program, etc.

Thanks guys :) It hasn’t happened again since I signed off AIM. Not sure why as I did not see any ads in the AIM window. I will likely do a complete reload of AIM.

I had already run a check thru all programs opened by registry keys and found nothing untoward.

I also ran a check on new wav files, but noticed nothing recent either.

Thanks for the help and I’ll let you know if it pops up again!

    Hey KW

Has it happened again since the complete reload of AIM?

What do you want for Christmas :)
